MUCH less traditional hip hop. Maybe I'm exaggerating but at this rate I seriously think this will end up being the last year hip hop had any mainstream presence at all.

Post-Grunge and emo are completely gone. Not a single hit from either genre in 2011.

Kim Kardashian (she's been famous since 2007 but has been in the limelight CONSTANTLY this year. definitely her peak year)

Hipster's emergence into the mainstream (Pumped Up Kicks, the first hit indie rock song if I'm not mistaken). Imo, hipster will be to the 10s what emo was to the 00s.

William and Kate wedding

It's now clear what "the '10s fashion look" is (scarves, cardigans, loose-top-tight-pants, sundresses, a generally dressed up look)

I think maybe he's saying she is just rehashing an already tired out retro '60s soul style(it has been repeated several times since the '80s), she's not very original(although she's not the only one). On top of that she really does sound out of place with all the electro-house and dubstep of today(that's probably a good thing to alot of people though, who are more into organic sounds).

Thats exactly what I'm saying, she is out of place. I respect her as a person, but i'm not a fan of 60's soul at all and her songs are annoying to me.

Overall, I'd say 2011 has been somewhat proggressive in pushing the '10s along(especially the late part of the year), like the Arab Spring/Occupy movement and indie rock/alt rap gaining a little more mainstream momentum. The pop culture's separated itself enough from the '90s/early '00s to where some things from then can be retro/or brought back with new pop cultural references, like Beavis and Butthead watching Jersey Shore and the noted difference between the music videos they watched in the '90s vs now.
