Turns out the gal who was the basis for the novel Sybil, about a woman with multiple personalities, was faking it all along.

No, it means they earned those Emmy's even MORE because they fooled us all into thinking it was a true story.  :D

Oh yeah, Sybil is a bunch of crap.  The case was suspect from the get-go.

I love that movie though.  It's great television.

Multiple Personality Disorder is no longer recognized by WHO statistical classifications or the DSM.  The currently recognized condition most closely resembling multiple personality is Dissociative identity disorder.  Common symptoms are memory loss, multiple and dissimilar personality traits, somatic disturbances, volatile moods, and fugue states.  However, discrete and entirely developed multiple personalities are almost entirely fictitious.  "Sybil" made the diagnosis (and self-diagnosis) popular, but I have only read of a few documented cases, and Shirley Mason (aka. "Sybil") wasn't one of them.

"Sybil" also popularized the notion of "repressed memory," particularly pertaining to child sexual abuse.  Malicious clinicians have gone so far as to draw out such claims in suggestible patients and accused abusers have actually gone to prison as long as 40 years after the alleged abuse.  Even when claims made via "repressed memory" syndrome are not demonstrably false, the evidence is laughable from a legal standpoint.  These practices have been largely discredited and the courts treat them more suspiciously than twenty or thirty years ago.
