Subject: Is it me or 2011 is too much like the late 00s?
Written By: 00s_teen on 09/04/11 at 7:07 am
Sure, some things are way different from the way they were in 2006-2007 and early 2008, but I cannot feel any real difference from late 2008, 2009 and 2010. It's all the same for me. Sure, rap and R&B got washed out and declined, but apart from that things are way to similar. And there's almost no change in the way people dress in my area. It's like the late 00s over here. In contrast, 2006-2009 were a lot different than say 2001-2004. 2005 was like a cusp year. 2001 was sure similar to the 90s, but in a way it was a lot different from 1998-1999, yet 2011 is very similar to 2008-2009. By 2001, most mid/late 90s fads were dying already, while currently most late 00s fads are still here with us. What happened? Why does 2011 feel like the late 00s and not like the 2010s? Will the 2010s will be a carbon coppy of the late 00s? I'm scared of that thought!

Give it time...I thought crunk and snap music were NEVER gonna go away, then all of sudden they were gone. Today is basically the same as the very late '00s (2009), but that's only 2+ years ago. I'm actually surprised how different even 2007 seems even though it's only 4+ years ago.

Look at how similar 1989 and early/mid 1991 are or 1979 and 1981, usually the 9 year of a decade starts off the trends of the early period of the following decade. I do agree 2011 is very similar to 2009 but the difference is post-grunge and emo are dead, post-crunk rap is barely hanging on and the rappers associated with the late '00s like Lil Wanye are changing their look to a skinny jeans hipster look. The biggest difference I see though is "indietronica" is starting to get more popular, Pumped Up Kicks is one of 2011's biggest hits, and then tablets have been getting more common too since early 2010(with the iPad release). I consider 2009-2012-ish to be the same era(the electropop/dubstep/Obama/Jersey Shore era).

But when will the stupid electro/synth pop/auto-tune trend die off? I think it's already too saturated.

If I had to guess, probably around 2013/2014, music trends usually last about 4-6 years(disco, grunge, teenpop, crunk, ect.).

Yes, because the years of 2009 to 2012 are the "tween years" imo.

I think that the mid-2010's are going to feel alot like the early 2010's.

Every decade is different so you can't really compare decades.
1961 felt very 50s I bet and very similiar to 1958, and culturally the 60s didn't truly begin until 1964.
But the 80s culturally began pretty early, like 1982 I'd say.
So it's unpredictable and there's no comparing.

I don't think It will ever die off,It's a genre kids today enjoy listening to.

It's a music fad, most music fads are popular for about 4 years and then other newer music fads take their place, I think electropop is on the tail end of it's mainstream popularity in late 2011(it's been dominant since late 2008). I've noticed the use of auto tune has somewhat declined too although it is not completely faded yet. I personally think 2012 will really start to bring in the 2010s pop culturally. I also think electropop/autotune will date very bad too.

I've noticed the decline in autotune in 2011 too, which I predicted a while back. Go me! ;D
I've also noticed ballads are becoming popular...there weren't too many hit ballads in 2009 and 10.
i think electropop and autotune will be dead by late 2012 and the artists will either fade or move to something new.

I think electropop is a good bridge between the crunk '00s and probably electronic based indie music that might be popular in the mid '10s. Overall though I feel electropop is a more early '10s trend , the late '00s was more dominanted by snap rap, auto tuned R&B, and emo.

It's already kind of happening, I think Lady GaGa is basically dropping electropop. Really "Judas" was the only single that had that typical electropop sound and it did the worst. You and I is like rock/country lol.

I think the late 00s/early '10s represents a cultural/politcal era, similar to late 60s/early 70s or late 80s/early 90s, late 90s/early 00s,etc. Cultural trends obviously dont change just because the year ends in zero, most decades have a holdover period that ties together the later part of one decade and the early part of the next decade. It seems as if some people are calling the era we are in right now the tweens, encompassing the last years of the 00s with the early part of this decade at least until 2012. When 2013 comes around, it will become the era of the teens.

As for me I always liked the sounds of trumpets and horns, never liked autotune or electropop.

Those intruments are mainly used in jazz, early rock n roll, reggae, soul, funk, disco, and '80s pop.

No, it is definately you. If it wasn't, then your screen name would be '2011 is too much like the late 00s?' , but I think that is too long for the allowed character spaces for a user name.
