Subject: TV Trends of the 2010s (so far)
Written By: scttscootr on 09/03/11 at 6:56 pm
What are some of the trends in television in this decade so far? I've noticed a slight increase in the number of sitcoms on the air as opposed to a few years ago, with the addition of Modern Family and The Middle to ABC's lineup as well as Community, Parks and Recreation, etc. on NBC. This season, both NBC and ABC are supposed to be adding new nights of comedies to their lineups. I've noticed a slight downturn in the reality genre, at least on the networks (many cable networks almost depend on reality tv as their bread and butter because they cant afford to produce as many scripted shows). With the exception of American Idol and Dancing With the Stars, I hardly ever hear any buzz about any reality shows anymore, other than Jersey Shore and other cable shows. There's also a trend in music-related shows, both the music competition shows like Idol, The Voice, and The Sing-Off along with the upcoming X Factor but also musical comedies, namely, Glee, although I think NBC also has a new drama or comedy that is supposed to have a musical element coming out next spring. What does everyone else see as the dominant trends on tv in this decade?

Aside from Jersey Shore, I think Reality TV is pretty much dead. Scripted shows are popular again.

I also see a lot of Retro Stations popping-up, stations that used to be like TV Land.
I also hope a big studio like FOX or Disney make a joint-station and have shows from the 50's to the 90's.

Sadly, we still have the Simon Cowell influence dominating our TVs so 'reality' in some form or other still has a stranglehold on the UK public. Cowell put a You Bet style game show on TV called 'Red or Black' and the idea is that the studio audience are involved in a process of elimination based on picking either a 'red' or 'black' option until the last remaining person claims one million pounds. The show is full of contrived sob-stories and frustrated greedy people and, in a lame attempt to generate further publicity for the show, the winner happened to be a man who did jail time for beating up his ex girlfriend. The controversy wasn't that he did jail time for GBH, the controversy was he lied and said he beat up a man instead of a woman.
What is it with Simon Cowell anyway? He dominates the front page of the British tabloids by saying he enjoyed a threesome with two beautiful women. Big deal, with his money I thought it was a foregone conclusion that he had already enjoyed this activity. ;D
This whole 'controversy creates cash' idea is ruining entertainment on any level. Did Jerry Springer start this trend?

I don't think people care about reality tv anymore,I remember I used to watch pure family entertaining sitcoms like Family Ties,Cosby Show,Different Strokes and ALF back in the 80's.

I'm glad that fewer people are watching reality shows. However it seems there's more reality shows than ever when I turn on the TV.
