It pretty much already is.

Straightedge is like the rebellious/alternative/subculture lifestyle now, which is pretty sad.

Not a big fan of tattoos, I guess depending on how they're done they can be considered art, but they look weird when you're old (assuming they're not lost entirely amidst wrinkles and sagging)

Tatoos are popular... so is tatoo removal.  Of all the fads this will be looked on as one most foolish.  You can change your hairstyle or clothes, but a permanent tatoo is a problem.

I could personally careless, yes if you are a professional, you may want one that can be hidden, or is not of a Jim Beam Bottle in the hands of a voluptuous bar wench....  ::)  Or of a bull dozer on your forehead, pushing back your receding hairline (yes I know of it)!  Otherwise yes, people are going to judge you by it, and sometimes it WAS infact a stupid act of foolery.  Funny at one time, perhaps not funny 4 years later.  I have seen parents who have had tattoo's to symbolize their children. I love mine, and always wanted to get a tree frog crawling up my leg.  It is on my lower back, and no one hardly knows it's there unless I leave em know.

I see more tattoos on girls more than guys these days,must be the "in" thing these days.

I'm surprised that percentage isn't higher. These days, having at least one tattoo is practically the norm. It used to be the case that people would get tattoos to stand out, but these days, not having a tattoo is a good way to stand out.  :D

Anyway, I have two tattoos. I remember a lot of my friends and classmates seemed to be in a mad rush to get a tattoo as soon as they turned 18 (or as soon as they graduated from high school). It seems to be treated as a rite of passage these days.

True, true.  I'm just saying all the google hits had the same angle... "I know somebody who saw it...".  It's the key element of an urban legend, sort of like the one about the football team, a stomach pumped out of 1 gallon of fluid, and Elton John (or was it Rod Stewart?).  ;)

When I googled 'pink panther' 'tattoo' 'lawn mower' 'pubic' I got 101,000 hits.  You'd think with that many hits SOMEBODY would have a pic.

Of course on the other hand, with that many hits SOMEBODY has probably gone ahead and done it!  ;D

It's kind of like my cousin's story about when he punched Lorne Greene in the jaw in front of two state troopers who were escorting Mr. Greene,  and they didn't do anything about it.  Possible, no doubt...  :-X  Everybody in my family loves to tell the story but nobody was actually there to see it.

has anyone ever done a concordance study of what kind of cultures tend to see rises in interest in tattoos? i've always had a hunch it's a bit of a death instinct that underlies it. i bet if anyone researched it, they'd find things like that cultures with a preponderance of tattoos also tend to favor the emaciated, twiggy look in their fashion models.
