Subject: End of an era: 2008 or 2011?
Written By: SuperDude526 on 05/02/11 at 9:16 am
I know there are already two or three Osama threads already and to a lesser extent we've discussed this in the 00s subforum, but I gotta say I personally don't feel the national or cultural impact of this event nearly as much as Elections '08. Does anyone else feel as though that was a more defining moment in 00s history? Y'know, besides '11 being in the wrong decade and whatnot. :P
But think about it: the Sixties, in academic vernacular, encompasses an era spanning from around the mid-50s until 1974, when U.S. involvement in Vietnam officially ended and Richard Nixon announced his resignation. That, 1974, felt like the close of the Sixties, even though the '60s had been long over. I feel like in a big way, the '00s ended in 2008 when Obama was elected president; that was the end of the era and the beginning of a new one. Can anyone else echo that sentiment?

I beg to differ sir. It was definately 1762. 1756 did hold it's own, but 1762 was the 1980s of the 1760s 8)

Quite possibly. I think culturally, the 00s began on 9/11. This was a good way to "close the chapter", so to speak.
It makes sense. Its the middle of 2011.
Funny how these things work out every decade.

Right, I believe culturally and politically the 00s began with 9/11, but from there I'd disagree and say they ended with November 2008, if only from the standpoint of this being a different country by that time. But hey, maybe with distance from today and from this year it'll prove to have ended with Osama's death.

Sorry for people's mistrust. There have been a few people on here (maybe not you) who have taken decadeology too far and people on this site are now suspicious of every 'new comer'.
You may have to prove yourself over the next few weeks or months before some of these people warm up to you.
Anyways, I think that 2011 is a HUGELY important year overall, not just for the 10s!
Look at the protests worldwide, the Japan earthquake, the Japan nuclear problems, the economy, the tornadoes south of the US, The shooting in Arizona in January, the continuing recession, and of course the death of Osama Bin Ladin.

Yeah, my bad, I just tend to see the forest in the trees, namely that a decade's character comes out best in transition years. And although I see 2008 as sort of the turning point in terms of politics at home, I certainly see what you're saying. This year marks a transition in the sense of all sorts of things crumbling.

This is very well done, Mr.C, but I think the 90's transition was more from the Gulf War, the 60's-70's change came with the Moon Landing, and the 20's ended a month or two early with the stock market crash. If I amy, I'd like to add that we officially Transitioned from the 19th to the 20th Century when the Wright Brothers took flight!
BTW, Sure you can still party like it's 1999, but the music might sound a little dated. Super, with any luck, the admins will say we are discussing history and the attitudes of society far more than 'Decadeology', whatever that means!

I would put the 2010's transition more with the election of Obama, the late '08 finanical collapse, the death of Osama Bin Laden and(speculative) something that could happen between now and 2012 like you said , the 1990's transition the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. I'd put the 1980's transition between the disco demolition in 1979, the election of Reagan, the death of John Lennon, and the debut of MTV in 1981.

I think some people here get WAY too worked up over what they perceive to be decadeology. I fail to see how a discussion on cultural transition is similar to "Is 2008 more like 1984 or is 2001 more like 1993?" or something like that.

This is kind of an old topic now, but i just joined this site and thought i would comment on this subject as i have had similar feelings about the end of the last decade. 2008 seems like a year when much of what defined the 00s seemed to change, a relatively good economy went bust, we elected a new president, and much of pop culture started to change, with 2009 bringing more changes. I'd say late 2008/2009 represents a good transition between decades as the defining trends of one decade began to fade and trends of the new decade began to appear, including new tv shows like Glee, Modern Family, etc. and new music acts coming on like lady gaga, katy perry, etc. However, over the next few years, it may turn out that this decade will have a shift later on. Many decade seem to have early, middle and late periods, with different things defining different parts of decades, and we could see the same things happen this decade

It just feels entirely different, not so "gangsta" like how some places in the 00s were.

2009 is when the absolute dominance of hip-hop over American popular music ended so it was the end of an era (2003-2008) in that sense, also within hip-hop the beginning of the end of dominance of southern hip-hop. I like hip-hop quite a lot actually but I absolutely hated how oversatured, gimmicky and downright crappy it got in the late '00s. For those 5 years hip-hop absolutely dominated the music scene. That's not to say rap isn't popular anymore, but today basically you just have a few huge rappers (Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj) with basically no random one hit wonders and unfortunately r&b is significantly less popular than it was in the '00s. What's funny in early 2008 I posted a topic about how did rap completely take over American music, then not long after it's dominance all of a sudden starts weakening.
On the other hand I don't really think all that hip-hop/r&b has been replaced by better music, compared to like 2003-2004's scene I think today's quite a bit worse. It's better than 2006-2008 though when most mainstream rap just was really bad and pop wasn't any better than today. Fortunately mainstream rap has improved a bit (long way to go though) since then because it's not so ridiculously saturating radio right now so now hip-hop seems to be going beyond gimmicks and in a more serious direction. The lesson of it all is all fads come to an end after a few years, whether it be hair metal, new jack swing, grunge, boy bands, nu metal, crunk, and now this electropop is next on that list.

100% true about hip-hop.
2008-2009 was also the time when rock music declined sharply, because in the core 2000s it was still pretty big.

Yeah this is true. I kinda think rock started getting really crappy around 2006 just like hip-hop, emo sucked big time and late '00s post grunge was much worse than early '00s. Unfortunately for rock I don't see much future right now, there's a few cool new rock acts out like Foster the People say, but you look at the rock charts and they're still freaking stuck in the (post) grunge era for the most part. Hip-hop is finally leaving the crunk era, but rock is mostly still stuck in neutral. If rock wants to survive it needs to move beyond the '90s.
