Subject: Is there a soul revival going on?
Written By: youngerderek on 04/19/11 at 7:49 pm
Right now, Adele and Cee Lo Green have two huge hits that sound straight out of 1960s Detroit Motown. Do you think this will lead to an all-out revival of soul music? Or is it just an anomaly in a sea of hip hop and club/dance music that will soon be forgotten?

Maybe a new Hall and Oates release that is true to their Philly blue-eyed soul roots, too? ???

Maybe soon. I wouldn't mind. That was some good stuff.

I had a feeling Soul music would get popular. A backlash against the synth-heavy and autotune-heavy Electropop is due imo.

I think if it got "brought back" we would be going backwards, it's already been done countless times before(late '90s neosoul), that's really boring in my opinion(and totally unoriginal), at least electronic music is innovative.

I think when it comes to music we've done pretty much everything. Sooner or later we're just destined to repeat ourselves.

Too early to say at this point. Cee Lo Green is in serious danger of one hit wonder status though. "fudge You" has been on the charts for months now. He's released other singles after that song, but none of those have even cracked the Hot 100. Adele's just recently had a hit so it's too early to say with her.
In other words, it all comes down to staying power. If Adele has a sustainable mainstream music career or Cee Lo Green defies the odds and gets more hits, then we can expect more. But if both wind up getting one hit and that's it, then a Soul revival isn't going to happen.

yeah i agree. i was thinking of the Fugees, and how Lauryn Hill has made something of a comeback. I hope we don't just repeat that again.

I don't agree with this, it just takes interesting and novel combinations of previous music genres to make something new, do you think rock n roll, disco, new wave, ect. came out of nowhere?
There is still much to cover in terms of music, there is almost limitless combinations still to be made, like someone "successfully" mixing soul, country, funk, reggae, and hip-hop into a coherent, seemless style, as an example, that would be a new genre of music, it just takes the right combination, skill, and talent to do so.

Fugees and Lauryn Hill grossly overrated. The remake of "Killing Me Softly" added nothing. Roberta Flack's original is still the gold standard. 8)
