Subject: Blue Peter could move from BBC1 after a run of 50 years
Written By: Philip Eno on 04/01/11 at 2:03 pm
The popular children's TV programme Blue Peter could be set to move from BBC1 after over 50 years on the channel, under new proposals.
The BBC is reported to be looking at moving the longest running children’s show in the world from BBC1 to its digital station CBBC.
Reports claim the proposed move is part of a larger look at efficiency savings at the broadcaster.
Blue Peter is currently broadcast twice a week at 4:30pm on BBC1. However, the repeats and spin-off shows shown on CBBC actually receive higher audiences as young viewers increasingly switch to dedicated channels.
Television industry magazine Broadcast claims it has been proposed to end the block of children’s shows on BBC1 during the late afternoon and instead move the shows to CBBC and Cbeebies.
The proposal is part of the Delivering Quality First (DQF) initiative which is looking at ways of making cutbacks. Other ideas being suggested included ending some overnight programmes.
Commenting on the proposals, a BBC spokeswoman said: ‘It is important to stress that this is only one of many DQF proposals and that there are no immediate plans to remove children's content from the BBC's terrestrial channels.’
Blue Peter is currently presented by Helen Skelton, Andy Akinwolere and Barney Harwood.
Skelton recently walked across a 150metre tightrope between the chimney of Battersea Power Station in central London for Comic Relief.

What, I'll even post video.

I mean, why resist the temptation to post a remark about some obscure canadian synthpop band with a one-hit wonder from 1983?
