Subject: The Trend of Weirdness in Pop Videos
Written By: sonikuu on 03/03/11 at 2:42 am
We've got several songs in the Top 40 right now which place "weirdness" as the central focus of their videos. You can thank Lady Gaga for his new trend that's gained popularity in the past year or so. It's an interesting little early 2010s trend, though it can be traced back to Lady Gaga's monstrous 2009 success. What are your thoughts on this trend?

I think it's refreshing because I remember when Britney was popular 1999 to 2002, all the female pop singers had blonde hair and it was kinda scary!
But it's nice to see variety and eccentricity a little bit. I just hope that it doesn't go overboard. Though some may say that it already has.

After the 80's there was a trend of super normal in pop culture, the 90s and most of the 00s pop culture and fashion was very bland and moderate. Since around 2009 there has been a move back to flamboyance in fashion and pop culture, this is probably why the early 10s might seem very "80s-ish" to some. I think Lady Gaga is partly responsible for this cultural trend in the early 10s.

I'm pretty sure there has always been weird pop music videos besides the 80's ones. Rihanna's new video reminds me a lot of Madonna's Erotica and Jusify My Love videos. Lady Gaga has her new one that I guess you'd call weird but at the same time it seems like she is almost honoring those type of 80's music videos. I'm sure your right that Lady Gaga kinda started this trend again, but the reason she became popular is because people liked her flamboyent image and songs and that could be because enough time has passed that people miss things from the 80s and other decades.

Ke$ha looks likes Lauren Conard from that side view. No in 2002 Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and Avril didn't have blonde hair. I know Avril does now though. I found Michelle and Vanessa hotter than Britney back then.

Yeah, starting in 2002 there were female pop singers who didn't care for Britney's style of singing or fashion, especially Avrl, some people called her back then the anti-Britney. ;D
The ones with blonde hair? Christina, Mandy Moore (only in 1999/2000), Jessica Simpson, Shakira, Willa Ford, and more.

I think Willa Ford had one hit and than dissapeared after that. I think Mandy Moore had a few hits. She didn't last very long either. She was the Debbie Gibson of Generation Y with doing Broadway Plays and having the singing career before the whole Broadway Play thing. Debbie was more popular of course and had more hit songs than Mandy did.

I think the pop stars of today want to stand out in the crowd.

Yeah I think GaGa wants to stand out in the crowd but Rihanna and Britney just want to be sex symbols.

Yeah but remember rapper Busta Rhymes music video's in the late 1997-early 1998 period? They were pretty crazy in a good way. Nine Inch Nails's "Closer" video was weird too in 1994. A couple of Marylin's Manson's music video's off the top of my head were bizzare too back in the mid to late 90's. The music video for "Soundgarden's" "Black Hole Sun" in 1994 was bizzare too.

Lady Gaga is more weird now than she used to be.
