Subject: A return to more formal wear?

Written By: Ryan112390 on 03/01/11 at 8:59 am

Do you believe that the 2010s will begin a return to more 'formal' clothes being worn in more casual situations--in essence, in some ways, a move backward? I mean more dressy clothes being acceptable for casual situations, and perhaps a move away from the utterly casual jeans and t-shirt to maybe dress shirts returning as normal wear for men, suits returning to prominence and maybe a return of hat wearing for men?

Fashion (for men anyway) has stagnated since the 1980s--the jeans, t-shirt and sneakers uniform is becoming a bit boring. Why not go back to a classier form of dress? I think the casual attire of men and women from the 1930s-early 1970s (I'm talking about mainstream people, not counter-culture people) was very classy--Gloves and elegant dresses for women and their furs about their necks, fedoras for men and double breasted suits and/or three-piece-suits--was a lot classier than today's wear. Today's casual dress is so sloppy and casual, no sense of elegance or class. Even a return to more formal hairstyles--like the short, slicked back look of the '30s-70s--would be cool

Compare some of our past Presidents to our modern one:

Not to say that I dislike the idea, but I wonder if that would be a tangible goal. Our society has changed a great deal since the days of fedoras and dress skirts. I don't think formal wear has been in fashion since the '60s.

I'm not saying it's impossible, because since "retro" is still in vogue, anything could happen.

I think since the 90s we've been in an 'anything goes' mood and it might be like that for the next 200 years or so (just a guess, Lol).

And since the revolution of the 60s we've been trying to get away from the overly conservative way we dressed before the 60s!

What we forget is that the 50s to about the 90s was a special era where the way we dressed changed every decade. We forget that a person in 1899 dressed pretty much the same as a person did in 1800. I mean, there were subtle differences, but overall the look was the same.

Who knows? Maybe we'll be dressing the same for the next few hundred years.

Fashion still changed like every 3-4 years in the 00s/early 10s, the last major fashion change came around 2008-ish. Our culture is just becoming more individualist in a sense, everyone does not have to follow the current fashion trends to be accepted or considered "cool"(I think this is a good thing). I do think fashion in the 10s is moving toward a suave, urbane, vaguely 40s-ish look, not exactly the same as formal wear from the pre 60s era, but with a modern twist.
I associate the very casual "anti-fashion", minimalist look with the 90s and early 00s, since around 2006/2007 and especially 2008 I've noticed the fashion trends either moving in a indie-ish, neon rainbow colored look(I think of MGMT) or the more dark and suave v neck shirt, short fitting vest, scarf look(especially for men), there is also the "guido" look of Jersey Shore.

I have noticed that back here in the States (at least here in Atlanta), that the women are dressing a lot nicer and more like their counterparts in Europe and Asia have always been, and not so much the frumpy look that was in style in the mid-00's.

I've always liked fedoras and trilby hats and I bought a cheap straw one for about $10 (and it actually looks good on me), but it seems like the only people who wear them are either pretentious hipsters or douchey frat-boy types so I'm very reluctant to wear it in public.

I really wish they'd come back in style.

I'll wear whatever i have to for work, but on my own time, I'm not wearing a suit. Right now, I'm wearing a t shirt, a buttoned up neon, a green hoodie, some slim leg jeans, and converse shoes. Don't turn this into a anti-smoking argument, lol. Formal wear is definitely making a return, I have a friend who works at Dunkin Donuts, apparently they are moving to more formal wear, just like Walmart did a couple years ago. No pne is talking about ties outside of work and clubs, but dressing more "up" is definitely the style now, and I believe it will increase, think Bradley Cooper style. Not over done like Mad Men, which is a work environment.

People are too lazy to dress up.

I'm kind of a hybrid...obviously I don't wear a suit when I go out to do stuff, but I don't like to just wear jeans and a tshirt either (except in the summer). I usually wear at least some kind of jacket or scarf or something. and dress shirts.

During the summertime at Pathmark,I wore a shirt and tie and people were wondering why I was doing this? And I said "I'm bringing professionalism back" meaning this should be the way cartguys should dress or something like it. I get more attention that way.

Nevertheless, are you dressed for the occasion?
Mad props to Howard Cart Guy for this, the inspiration,
Sum 41, I'm sorry 'bout this crazy situation,
This parody needs to be written 'fore I'm out on my vacation.

(Carts!  It's what he's all about,
It's what he lives for, c'mon shout it out!)

xr9NmG68vPQ

Well he brings down the house, keeps 'mark in business today,
Just by movin out the carts in the usual way,
Sometimes his posts got a smell real funky,
Like makin' fun of Becky Black from her grade school party,
He can keep the beat but he can't breakdance,
It's hard to look cool in a shirt and pants,
And a tie that he wears, even if it looks wack,
It's a professional way to bring the '80s back.

- Props to Howard and apologies to Sum 41 for what I did to a couple of verses of their 2002 hit.  Lyrics in public domain, someone more talented than me, please finish this parody!  (I seriously can't beat the original lines about waking up to the pound of bacon, because, umm, I actually do that a couple of times a year, just because I can.)
