Subject: Super Bowl Ad with Eminem

Written By: LyricBoy on 02/07/11 at 6:04 pm

I have never been a Chrysler fan, but I do have to give them props for the Super Bowl ad that featured EnemaN Eminem.

Great vibe to the two-minute ad, and that Chrysler 200 definitely looks pimp.   8)

Eminem and Diddy were ripping it last night.  I really loved the Black Eye Peas performance in the Half Time with special guests Usher and Slash.

As far as favorite commercial, well the Kim Kardashian commercial was hot as hell!

Eminem Chrysler Spot:  Win.  Car commercials are hard to do well - and this one worked.  A straight in-your-face to those who see Detroit as nothing more than a postapocalyptic wasteland.  (Detroit is a postapocalyptic wasteland, but that's not the point - the thing that makes Detroit cool is the fact that the few hardy souls still eking out a living amongst the ruins are determined to build a new civilization from the scraps of the old one... they simply. will. not. give. up.  The Chrysler commercial took a risk and nailed this vibe dead-on.)

Black Eyed Peas vs. Tron vs. GnR vs. Usher vs. Bill Medley/Jennifer Warnes Mash-Up:  Well, I'll credit BEP for trying to sing for themselves instead of lip-syncing, but... now we know what autotune is for.  But not even a million miles of copper wire and the world's strongest bar magnets stuck to the coffin of the rapidly-rotating corpse of Patrick Swayze could generate enough power, so the guy responsible for lighting up the "V" in the "LO| E" stage set is now curled up in a corner, whimpering.  And Christina Aguilera is handing out checks to everyone who helped make it possible for a nation to forget how badly she screwed up the national anthem.

Seriously, I really like the idea of bringing some new flavor to the halftime show (vs. digging out acts that have been effectively retired for 20 years).  It's something that's been overdue for at least 10 years.  I'll give 'em props for trying, I'll even concede that the LED-suited Tron dancers were kinda neat, and you'll be seeing something like that for Hallowe'en costumes this year, but I visibly cringed at the first moment the singing started, and it just got worse from there.  The fail was more the fault of the audio engineers / mixers than it was the performers, but apart from one brief moment of cool (Usher's split-jump), that performance was worse than Up With People.

I really loved the commercials they had on this year, especially the Coca Cola commercials, the one with Michael Douglas, and that car commercial with the God of Water(forgot which God).  I don't know much about Detroit, besides the Detroit Lions, but I give Eminem mad props for representing his home town.  Say what you want about the man, but he is a true patriot.

As far as the performance goes, I agree that the sound system on the stage was pretty off.  I also thought they were rushing through most of the songs so they can be in sync with the rest of the plans that they had.  Regardless, I enjoyed their performance a lot more than the Who last year.  Don't get me wrong, the Who is a great band, but Rock music has pretty much dominated the Super Bowl Half Time show for the last 7 years(ever since the Janet Jackson incident lol).

I thought the Eminem Commercials were good...they were better than The Black-Eyed Peas and Christina Aguleria fudgeing-up The National Anthem!

Black Eyed Peas performance was really bad.
Electropop is just not made for stadiums.

A buddy of mine was at the game and he said the Peas performance in person was awesome. He then watched the video replay which he agreed, sucked.

Can you ask him about the audio mixing at both venues?  Maybe some of the actual voices in the audio nightmare of a huge stadium could have worked - but the autotune/pre-recorded audio would have been necessary (or at least mixed in at a louder volume than the actual voices) to save the broadcast version.

(Or did they really screw up by sending the the autotune track to the stadium and the live version to the broadcast?)

He said that the audio at the stadium was excellent.  So somebody musta muffed the connections to the TV feed.  :-\\

That probably explains it.  From the TV side, I remember numerous times the audio level of different singers was "off" relative to the autotune, and I also remember periods of autotune in the TV broadcast.  (Was watching on bunny-ears, over-the-air broadcast TV)

I like Eminem's songs, but I don't know if I like Eminem himself, or not. I've always been quite ambivalent about him.

I liked the commercial but it was a little too long though.

As for BEP's performance I though it was good. I only like a few of their songs though. I think Usher having there kind of looked out of place though.
