Subject: Jay-Z comparing autotune to 80's hair bands

Written By: Admiral Akbar on 01/14/11 at 6:52 pm

This came out at the very end of '09, but since this seems most relevant to the last year, I thought I'd make it a 2010's thread

I came across this obscure article (not really sure how dependable this source is, but it looks legit)

http://www.bravenewwave.com/2009/10/26/jay-z-on-why-auto-tune-is-the-hair-metal-of-hip-hop-its-losing-the-emotion/

In it Jay-Z basically goes on to say that autotune is doing the same thing to hip hop that the hairbands did to rock n' roll in the 80's, saying that all of todays mainstream rappers sound alike and everything is being homogenized to make a quick buck. I somewhat agree, but if you ask me this homogenization was going on long before autotune hit - when 50 Cent got big it seemed like every other week there'd be some random pseudo-gangsta all over pop radio and MTV, and they'd all sound the same. If you ask me, autotune is just continuing the same trend under a different guise. Anyone agree or disagree?

In my opinion Jay-Z is on the right track but to me ringtone rap killed hip-hop for me anyway.

I also hear so little rap and r n' b on the radio these days; a day I thought would never come.

Yeah me too tbh, it's never been the same since and I like hip-hop.

It's not like Hip-Hop during the Crunk and Ringtone Rap era was something most wanted to listen too.

Rap was great when all they rapped about was blunts, 40's, biches, and bangin'.

But once it devolved into all this "shawty shartay shake yo bootay" nonsense I lost interest.  It is as if somebody in the biz determined that the more times you say "shawtay" in a rap, the more records you're gonna sell.  ::)

You'll never hear Paul Stanley using Autotune

So do I.  If it's not the 80s or 90s hip hop, I WILL NOT listen to it.  What happen to REAL hip hop when it was the voice of the voiceless? What happen to the lyrical content of hip hop?  I remember being a child in the 80s when hip hop was so fun.  I remember being a teenager in the early 90s when hip hop was more diverse. Gangsta rap didn't dominated until the mid 90s, but even gangsta rap was better than this crappy hip hop mess in the 00s.

Jay-Z complaining about everything is being homogenized is like Colonel Sanders complaining about everything being chicken dinners!

The real hip hop was The Sugarhill Gang.

I said a hip, hop a hippie to the hippie to the hip hip hop and you don't stop a rocking to the bang bang boogie, say upchuck the boogie to the rythym of the boogity beat.

I compare this more to the boy band era of the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Hair bands had been around for a decade, but this boy band thing is about the same length and effect as autotune.  A lot of boy bands such as *NSYNC used autotune in their music.
