The beard in America was banished from mainstream society for most of the 20th century.  Artists, bohemians, and professors could have them.  Accountants, cops, and managers could not.  When my father grew his first beard in 1964, it was a countercultural statement.  However, ten years later, squares wore them with no objections.  Mind you, the beard in straight society was and remains trimmed and well-groomed.  A wild, bushy beard or a braided goatee won't get you much hassle except at a stuffy country club.  However, it won't get you a job either.

I prefer "clean shaven". My family tells me I look like Tom Cruise.

Facial hair is huge right now. I saw it all the time at my college. A lot of guys even go for the hillbilly/amish look.

I have started to notice this lately. I grew one this year, but not because it's "in style". I just got tired being in 27/28 and looking 19 or 20...and that was with a thick, long goatee.

I look about 17 with no facial...I could never do the clean shave. lol

I tried the mustache and goatee look then I decided a decade ago to just shave it all off.

I've definitely noticed an increase in beards among young guys during the last few years.

After a big boom in the 1960s and 1970s, facial hair gradually declined throughout the 1980s and 1990s.  I think by the mid or late 1990s, the clean cut look was unquestionably in.  The long hair of the 80s and early 90s also disappeared as well, to be replaced by the short spiky look.  I think the trend peaked in the early 2000s with the metrosexual look.  It seemed like all hair was considered bad.  Guys were getting laser hair removal and waxing their torsos, etc.  I even remember young people describing older guys with mustaches and beards as "sketchy".

But then something changed.  I'm not sure what it was, but something happened around, oh, 2005 / 2006.  Guys started becoming hairier.  First, hair started to get longer.  In fact, I started growing my hair out for the first time since my college days in the eighties.  Then around 2008 / 2009 it seemed that chest hair started coming back.  Then a little later I started noticing the beards.

Personally, I don't care much for facial hair, but even if I wanted to grow a beard I couldn't (genetics / hormones).

I could grow a beard but I just like to keep my face clean shaven.

I think beards have kinda made a comeback since the late 2000s...not the full-on scraggly ones, but the neatly trimmed hipster beards, or the stoner-looking mini beard with just chin hair. I actually think those look kinda cool.
