NOTHING Oprah does goes unnoticed here! She tells us her favorite things, names her approved books, and we follow like sheep! How one person can be so powerful and persuasive and still be likable is the magic of Oprah 8)

I love Oprah. I often said the TV is my church and Oprah is the god I pray to! ;D
I've said it before and I'll say it again. In the early 90s when I worked at Barnes & Noble... before there was Oprah's favorite Things and before Oprah had her book club the sheep were flocking in... every time Oprah named a book on the air, featured an author or talked to actors in an adaptation film those books went flying off the shelf. This was before DVRs. We would get calls from people who were watching the show asking us to hold the book. After the show was over people would trickle in and ask for the book. On the weekends the VCR people would trickle in... we had to special order the books because we never had more than a handful avail. I remember when no one was reading Bridges of Madison County. The day after Oprah talked about it started flying off the shelf. I always said we need as seen on Oprah section but the manager never listened to me... now they have stickers that say Oprah's Book Club ::)
At least the publishers were smart and started sending us notices that read so&so will be on Oprah to promote such&such in case you want to order extra copies....we did and they still ran out.
(FYI- I read Bridges of MC because of Oprah but I thought it sucked.)

I've only ever watched a handful of episodes and that's going waaay back - maybe the 90s...?! She's on during the day here and as I work, I don't get to see it anyway...hence my shock at her immense popularity :o

I can see why alot of people don't like Oprah. She can be pretty stuck up.
But for some reason she doesn't bother me. I think it's the $$$$!! :-X
No, but to be serious, she isn't perfect, but I find her sincere and truly caring of other people even if she can be a bit into herself sometimes.

Shes not retiring she's just not doing her daily talk show any longer. She will still have O magazine and now OWN (the oprah winfrey network)
She probably still has that satellite radio station and she certainly still has her production company.

Sally and riki both ended their run I think in the late 90s maybe early 00s Phil retired in 96
After a while in the late mid to late 90s there were a crap load of "shock" fest talk tv shows. Oprah did it for awhile to stay in the game then decided to only do shows that were life improving or at least sent a message.
Ie when she did a show about domestic violence it wasn't to sensastionalize it it was to speak to people about the signs and the options to get out.
When oprah went kinder and gentler and spiritual she elevated herself to a Demi god. She'd deny it but it's kinda true.

She did a show in my hometown in Ohio in 1988. She did it on the high rate of unemployment there. Nothing much changed after she left though, a casino in Atlantic City had a recruiting drive in town which took a few people away but the town was dying anyways, even Oprah couldn't bring it back to life. :\'(

The others were all talk show hosts in the 90. Before dating reality tv and real world / big brother type reality shows talk ahows featured lots of dysfunctional people looking for 15 minutes of fame infamy.

I've been watching the Aussie eps of Oprah's trip down under.... no offense because the country is beautiful but the eps are boring...
basically day one was a travelogue...
day two was oprah visiting random aussie's and giving them tix to her show.
day three was 5 mins with russell crow, 5 mins with Jay Z and 5 mins with someone else I've already forgotten who... bon jovi.... I didn't watch
I must admit - the gift to the kids from the under privileged school and to the dude with cancer ----those were amazing and made me tear up a bit...

Oh I've been watching a lot of OWN! The oprah winfrey network.
My favorite show is the one that follows the oprah show producers behind the scenes...we get to see them stress out to try and pull off the impossible. It's fantastic. and better than some of the actual shows themselves.
I also like the competition show looking for a host of an original show on OWN. there are 10 contestants trying to win their own show... so far two (well three as of last night) have been eliminated.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Master Class ep she did with Maya Angelou.
I watch the Peter Walsh show because I love watching other people declutter - I just don't wanna do it myself.
I haven't watched the myth or miracle show but I guess it sounds interesting. nor have I watched we've been kidnapped by our kids a show about kids who think their parents pay more attention to their work than themselves...
I am looking forward to the Judds reality show because, even tho I hate country music, I think wynona and naomi have an amazing dynamic.

I read some of Oprah's bio and heard some interviews of her and wow, she had a wild youth, especially her preteen and early teen years!
She was extremely rebellious as an early teen and one time drank detergent to get attention or more correctly, cry for help. This is a huge contrast to the more mature and stable Oprah we see today. Boy, how much a person can change in a long time!

She wanted to commit suicide because she was afraid that she would be disowned by her family and/or dad because being pregnant at 14 back then was considered 'shameful'.

Most under I would say 40 don't understand what it was like to have a child "out of wedlock" in those days. The greatest shames upon a family were homosexuality and unwed mothers. Homosexuality could be hidden, but it wasn't so easy to hide a pregnancy. Sometimes there would be a "shotgun wedding" sometimes a mere beating by the males in the family, but usually the father of the child got away free, and I mean no child support, no consequences, at all. The girl though, her life became hell. In a lot of cases she was sent away to a home for unwed mothers where she gave birth and the child was taken away form her. She didn't have any rights to the child at all. Her family would do there best to make sure no one found out, if it became known she was ostracized, her friends couldn't talk to her, she was thrown out of school, sometimes out of the house without the ability to return, ever. Many times the mother of the young girl would pretend to be pregnant and raise the child as another child, a sibling of the actual mother. Eric Clapton is a famous example of this.

There is a reason why "out of wedlock" was so unpopular (and still should be). It is an exceedingly poor way to being a child into the world whose life will be successful from a purely statistical standpoint. I'm not talking about the couple who simply decides not to marry but raises the kids in one household. I'm talking about the "baby mama" and "baby daddy" thing you see going on these days. The American statistics on out of wedlock births are a national disgrace and show no sign of turning around.

she wasn't afraid of being disowned she knew exactly what would happen if her family found out she was pregnant.
She has said that when she moved back in with her father, because her mom could no longer want to deal with her, she was pregnant. Her father stood in the kitchen and laid down the rules for her... not knowing she was already pregnant he told her that he'd rather see her floating dead down the river than have her come home and tell him she was expecting a child. Seems like she had few choices.
The thing I've always admired about Oprah, even without all the hardships of her early upbringing, there's "no way" she should have become what she is.... as she says she was born a negro female in rural mississippi in 1954 in a home that had no outdoor plumbing. she had so many strikes against her at birth.... she was black, female, and poor in an area where, at the time, blacks were being lynched for the crime of being black and women were deemed not as good as men in anything...... and now she is, dare I say, the most influential woman... screw it...the most influential person in America. That's pretty out-effing-standing...

That being said...Girls and women who became pregnant paid the price, whereas the males involved weren't really held accountable. The reasons for the pregnancy did not change the shame involved. Conception by rape was looked on as the same as conception through promiscuity. If a twelve year old became pregnant it was her own fault, she enticed the 35 year old uncle. Going to jail for statutory rape was pretty much a fallacy. It pretty much depended on the color, and/or connections of the male or female involved. The American statistics for holding fathers accountable is still a national disgrace. Maybe with a bit more enforcement and accountability the trend could turn.

Oh I agree with you there, it certainly takes two to tango, so to speak.
The problem is... there are plenty of people out there who do not think all of this out-of-wedlock business is a problem. When I lived in South Bend IN, a stat came out that indicated something like 70% of the kids were born out of wedlock. People came out of the woodwork assailing this statistic as being culturally biased, saying that advocating wedded parenthood was 'cultural imperialism'. :-[

I'm one of those "out of wedlock" mothers. But then I was older and financially stable. The father the same, but no interest in being a father. I have come to believe, after seeing children of married, separated, and never married parents, it isn't so much the wedlock as the involvement of the parents whether they are together or not. Happily married with children is an ideal, but not, by any means a guarantee.

I think, if oprah did indeed drink detergent while pregnant, she was doing so to try and get rid of the baby. Before Roe v Wade desperate women did lots of tragic things to end unwanted pregnancies... living in rural mississippi there weren't many back alleys she could visit to get an abortion and being in such a small town the news would probably get back to her father any way

she wasn't afraid of being disowned she knew exactly what would happen if her family found out she was pregnant.
So you're saying that she was afraid of getting killed by her parents? ???

Generally, if it doesn't kill the mother it doesn't kill the child, but it could impair it. People don't understand how really, really, awful it was for a woman to be pregnant without being married, not bad for guys, just women. We are not as far removed from the Taliban as some would like to believe, or acknowledge.

Actually, yes it could. When you are pregnant the baby ingests everything you ingest. If you eat or drink something that could kill you it could kill the baby, and it would take a lot less to kill the baby than it would to kill the mother.
What do you guys think of her big secret today? I am not a fan, but even I thought it was cool. From the sister's perspective, how would it be to know for a couple of years that your sister was Oprah Winfrey? I give her major kudos for not going tabloid with it. Good for her.

Why is this a surprise? A huge percentage of American blacks, and quite a few American whites, whose ancestors can be traced back before the Civil War, have "mixed blood". The legacy of slavery, and the ability of the slave holders to rape their slaves(think Thomas Jefferson), produced many, many children. In the post colonial era, blacks and whites married legally, so much so that those that wanted to promote racial separation to further their agenda, passed anti-misegenation laws laws to prevent it. Just because the children were born of rape, or were not recognized as legal, doesn't mean they are any less related.
