Millions of viewers watched in horror as a contestant in a TV daredevil show was seriously injured while trying to bounce over five cars on spring-powered stilts.

Samuel Koch was left slumped and unconscious after bounding over the third vehicle and landing on his face.

Members of the audience at the German Wetten, Dass? show studio gasped and consoled each other with hugs as the amateur stuntman lay sprawled on the floor.

Presenter Thomas Gottschalk announced he was calling off the show for the first time since he began hosting it in 1987.

Koch, 23, was taken to the University Hospital of Dusseldorf. His injuries are said to be serious.

Teenage heart-throb Justin Bieber later announced on Twitter that he had been forced to cancel his appearance on the Saturday night variety show.

The Canadian pop star tweeted: "Just want to let my people in Germany know I won't be on Wetten Dass tonight as an accident has taken place and ... we all don't think it is right to continue.

"Please pray for Samuel Koch & his family as we wait and hope for his health and safety."

The popular, family-orientated show features people performing unlikely feats, while celebrity panellists predict whether they will succeed or not.

Koch - who was wearing a chest protector, knee pads and a helmet at the time of the accident - had four minutes to somersault over five cars.

The German student and gymnast was wearing so-called kangaroo boots or powerbocks.

He succeeded at his first jump, baulked at the second and landed on his face as he lost his balance after jumping over the third car driven by his father Christopher.

The cameras then swung to show a dismayed studio audience as Koch lay flat on his face.

The incident was broadcast live to millions of viewers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on Saturday night.

No doubt we'll be seeing this on The Smoking Gun's World's Dumbest Daredevils XXXVIII in the near future.

Leif Garret, Tonya Harding, Danny Bonnadouchebag, and Todd Bridges (the dude from Diff'rent Strokes) will have a field day with this one.  ;D
