Subject: Sheryl Crowe's Cover of MJ - What's the Point?
Written By: LyricBoy on 09/05/10 at 4:14 pm
I just heard a remake that Sheryl Crow has done of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back".
She seems to have karaoke'd it, trying to sound as much like Michael as possible. ::)
What's the point of that? I can see doing an homage that takes a different spin on the same song, but a "soundalike" sounds like a mercenary effort.
Anybody got any thoughts on this? ???
***Oops*** I posted this on the wrong board. Can somebody move it? (I cannot even delete it) :-[

I thought it said Sheryl Crowe is on the cover of CMJ! Surprise, surprise!
College Music Journal is still pushing their college-version of Billboard Magazine but they could fall off the face of the Earth tomorrow and it wouldn't be consequential to anything!
::)

Sheryl has not the best cover of an MJ song, but it's not terrible . 'Smooth Criminal' by AAF. Now that's good stuff!
In Canada, we had this in 1991, which I loved at the time ...

what's the point of any of these recent covers? the stereo in my workshop doesn't pull in much for FM radio (even after a recent upgrade to a bigger antenna) and I was subjected to the local light pop station a lot this past week. it's about the only thing that comes in decently sadly. I was subjected to at least a dozen covers, and I would say they were all very weak. bland and inoffensive is probably the nicest thing I can say for them.
Cheap cash-in is my best guess. I have a lot of respect for someone that can transform a popular song into something even better (Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt" comes to mind), or even a song nearly no one has heard of it. Taking an already popular song and just covering it faithfully, especially by an artist that is already well known, is strictly a money grab.
