Subject: CMA's Gender Bias?

Written By: JTCool on 09/03/10 at 11:45 am

I guess it's never really been a question in the past that the CMA's(and country music in general) have had a gender bias against female country singers. But after reading the two articles below I still find it amazing how it's 2010 and we are still dealing with gender bias in the world.

Even though I am female, I personally am not usually a big fan of female country artists, they come across sounding too much like teen pop.  "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift is a good example.

There are exceptions, of course... but even Shania Twain's "Man I Feel Like A Woman" was hard to take seriously as a country song.  I think it has always been a difficult genre for females, (especially 20 year old females like Taylor Swift) to conquer.  They may be hugely popular, but I'd guess they aren't really seen as true country artists.

Country needs a little less Tammy Wynette(Stand By Your Man  ::) ) and a lot more Carrie Underwood

Two of the most popular recording artists in history:

Loretta Lynn

Linda Ronstadt:

A lot of country music lyrics are male chauvinist, but female country-western singers -- whether they like to be called "ladies or "women" -- have never been in short supply.

I remember when Loretta came out with "The Pill"  People were, of course, aghast.  Well she should know something about being married and having babies after being forced into marrying at 13(don't care how you look at it, 13 married is forced) to 21 year old "Doolittle" who slapped her around of a regular basis.  Today the parents and Doolittle would be in jail.  She had 4 kids before the age of 19 and was a grandmother at 36.  Yep, a country girl.

What I don't get is why it seems they can't nominate more than one female in the Entertainer of The Year category? I also find it strange that only 3 women have won that award in the past 20 years. I can see why the CMA's back when they started didn't award it to many females because the world back then was more sexist against women. But even in this past decade the only females to win were the Dixie Chicks in 2000 and Taylor Swift in 2009. I'm not saying the CMAs should just start handing out awards just because the person is female because I actually think Taylor Swift shouldn't have won that award last year, it's just amazing that so few women are nominated when there have clearly been many worthy female nominees for EOTY over the past twenty years (Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood, Reba(who won only once in 1986), Lee Ann Womack, Terri Clark, etc)

Interesting question, though.  I don't know the answer.  I don't really follow contemporary Country Music.

Yeah it's just hard to wrap my head around how some people could still think like that. Oh well.  :-\\

Bias, prejudice, hate, in all its forms aren't  things of the past by any means.  They are powerfuls tool and there are many willing to use, and be used, by them to solidify notions of what defines their own superiority.

"I've heard plenty of whiskey-drenched honky-tonks glorifying people who carry guns and beat their wives!

-- Jello Biafra

OK, maybe the guy wants to see Johnny Cash by himself and Linda Ronstat with the wife.  I dunno.
