Nope. I see no difference. 2010 just feels like a continuation of the late 2000s.

I agree. Though, the late 2000's have a bit of a different feel from the early and middle part, from '06 onwards

The first half felt like 2009...going nowhere.

The second half feels like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I'll tell you more by Labor Day!

Does anybody think, say when people are looking at 2009 in the future, it will be more associated with the early 10's than the late 00's, it was just so different from the other years in the 00's? Like all the trends popular now, while emerging around 2008, exploded in popularity in 2009. I know for me personally a year like 1999 JUST did not seem like the 90's any more, it goes WAAAAY better with the early 00's than anything esle( to me that year seems closer to 2001/2002 than 1997).
I think it could be another year or two before new trends start to emerge that will be distinct from the Lady Gaga/Ke$ha/electropop stlye.

This is the way I look at it:

2005/2006 -the trends and artist that defined the late 00's start emerging(autotune, Rihanna, T-Pain, Timbaland stlye urban dancepop, ringtone rap)

late 2008/2009 - the things that might define the rest the early 10's become dominate.

You must remember that the early, mid, and late parts of a decade's pop culture will be quite different from each other even though there can be an overall vibe to the entire decade.
It will usually take maybe a year or two before trends start changing from the preceding decade.  2009/2010 just feels like one huge year to me personally, but maybe in the future even though 2009 is technically still part of the late 00's, it will be lumped in with the ealry 10's.

In my opinion, 2000 and the first half of 2001 goes with the late '90s moreso than the '00s.  1997 goes more with the mid-90s than the late '90s.  I think the late '00s will linger on until at least the end of Obama's term.  It sometimes seems like the cultural mood changes when the administration in Washington does (1981, 1993, 2001, 2009 are all examples).  Assuming Obama will be a one-term President, this period will mark a transitional period much like the period from 1989-1992 did during Bush Sr.'s term.

I agree, but I still think a year like 1999 really got the 00's culture started, In fact, that period influenced the first whole half of the 00's, alot of the mainstream 00's artists emerged in 1999, like Eminem and Christna Aguilera.

It's a bit like the way 1990 for some was still another 80s year in some ways.  I think 10s 'feel' will start of next year, maybe even at this end of this year still.

But pop culture wise I think it's the same as 2009.

In my opinion, 2000-2002 is closer to the late 90's than the 00's. I saw a transition some time in late 2002 to early/mid 2003 that went more with 00's culture. I personally link 1997 with late 90's culture, even though it does have elements of the mid 90's. I guess you can say that I see 1996/1997 has a transitional period in 90's culture similar to how I see 2002/2003 in 00's culture.

there was a sort of interluding era from 1998ish to 2003ish that had elements of both periods. the 90s/00s change was very slow, while the 80s became the 90s quite quickly.

Of course . just like the beginning of every other decade. it's not gonna change over night. For instance:In 1990 the music still sonded like it did in 1989. It really didn't settle in real good until like 1992, but in 1991, there were certain elements that set couse for the decade, like Nirvana. Hair bands were still around in 1992, but they were on there way to the grave.

Good point. here is another example of your theory: Grunge was still popular in 1996. But in 1997 Nu Metal bands like Limp Bizkit, deftones among others were poppin up.So I believe that the 00s musical era started early.

Yeah but Limp Bizkit wasn;t even popular until near Christmas Time of 1998. Yeah "The Deftones" were pretty popular in 1997 on the rock music scene.

I dunno why people say grunge died in 1996.  Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam had albums and hits around 1998-99 or so, and there were still post-grunge bands that were relevent, such as Seven Mary Three and Bush.

Rock was pretty music overshadowed by rap(Puff Daddy, Jay-z, Busta Ryhmes, and DMX)and R&B(Brian McKnight, R. Kelly, Usher, and Montell Jordan)  in 1998. In 1999 post-grunge as you call it those bands like Bush and Seven Mary Three and the original grunge bands(STP, Pearl Jam) could not compete with Britney Spears on a even keel popularity level. The only post-grunge band or grunge band for that matter that could be even keel popularity wise with the rise of teen-pop in 1999 was "Creed".

I think you could say grunge lasted into the early '00s and nu metal is kind of related to grunge to me. But really 2001-2002 are pretty grungy seeming at least compared to today.

I think what people mean was that grunge was past its peak in 1996. It definitely wasn't the monster it was between 1991-1995.

2010 feels different from the first half of '09, but not so much the second half. The 2009-10 (school year, for those in grade school) is pretty much centered around Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and similar artists. In fall of '09, I was thinking Owl City was going set a new trend in music, but other than the "Fireflies" song we haven't really heard anything. Now that we are approaching the fall of '10 and a new school year, there may be some more changes on the way. I'm hoping alternative rock will come back, which I though it was in late '08/early '09.

I disagree.  In '09 you still had glam rap, the dance pop had more of an urban sound.  In '10, its like Radio Disney has taken over the entire mainstream.  Fashion has quickly become much less emo.  Pop culture has really changed quite significantly this year.  There is a definite backlash against urban music taking root. I think in a few years, we will look back at 2010 as the year when things really started to change.  Culture wise, '09 and '10 are like different worlds, especially when comparing early '09 and late '10.

The older I get the more every year seems like every other year.  I don't really follow popular music trends very much anymore.  Fashion styles come and go and until they make the same styles for large women that they do for the size zero set, then I am not really affected.

I swear I feel like any day I'm gonna go stand out on my front porch, shaking my cane in the air yelling about the neighborhood kids on my lawn.  ::) :\'(

I figured out I suffer from depression and it affected my learning (depression makes it extremely hard to concentrate). My family and I thought I suffered from depression and ADHD, but it turns out I just suffer from depression.

Once I was medicated this year I started passing all my classes and I could finally control my depression.  8)
