Such was my gripe with the know-it-alls ranting about the millennium starting in 2001 because there was no "year zero."  Right.  Nor was there a year 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.  Julius Caesar didn't grumble about wishing the Jewish Savior would hurry up and be born because Bigus Dickus is tired of counting backwards! You could have just as well called 1995 the start of the new millennium.  You could have called it macaroni.  Old farts like me remember when "the year 2000" was so far in the future we would have palm-sized computers and lunar colonies.  Thank god about the latter.  I would be mining salt in the Sea of Despair!

I have heard several speakers and read a book or two on the subject. Looking at the way the stars were at the time of year, they all confirm a late March, early April birth, which goes along with what Max wrote.

But it doesn't line up with the date of Columbus's landing, and Columbus never had any contact with the Mayas or Aztecs. The Mayas Empire was long gone by 1492, and it was Hernando Cortez that conquered the Aztecs and enslaved all of Mexico, about 30 years later, which doesn't align with that calendar. Besides, the Mayas and Aztecs were idol worshippers that knew nothing of God, Allah, Buddha, or whatever you call the Supreme Being. They may as well run around screaming that Zeus is jumping down off Olympus or Jupiter's about to ride through the streets of Rome.

The point of the Mayan calendars is their mathematical accuracy.  The Mayan cultural beliefs are peripheral to the advanced understanding of time and space.  We don't know what the end of the Long Count means.  Cortez, in an act of Christian piety incinerated the Mayan's written records.  We have to show the heathens the way!  Smallpox took care of everything else.
