Now that we're halfway through 2010 as of noon today, you may have already noticed some things which make this year unique compared to even as recent as 6 months ago at the end of 2009. Of course this does not include pre-planned events. I'd say:

-The Apple iPad
-3D Entertainment
-The BP Oil Spill
-Justin Beiber
-Silly Bandz (available since 2004, but really hit fever pitch this year).
-Commercial availability of electric vehicles


And of course, the music is worse than ever!

3D Entertainment was seen last year when Avatar was released and Smart have been around since 1998.

Hideous partisanship in Washington (on both sides, but honestly moreso by the Republicans)
The continued dominance of electro-dance-pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, auto tune)
Indie rock getting more popular, (MGMT, Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem)
Continued 00s hairstyles
Animal bracelets
The growing popularity of Glee
The continued popularity of the Twilight/New Moon/Eclipse series
The future of Lebron James and his 2010 "Summer of Lebron"
The Lakers and Celtics pretty much affirming that they are the best teams in the NBA today
A new era in the NHL as young stars are successful in playoffs and fame (Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kane)
A pretty solid rookie group for the MLB (Jason Heyward, Stephen Strasburg)
The Yankees and Phillies remain the dominant teams in the MLB, regardless of their World Series meeting in 2009

Agree.  She has only had one big radio hit in 2010.  Bad Romance and Telephone were both late 2009 holdovers.  Teeth will soon be released as a single, but I don't see it becoming as popular as many of her past hits have been.

Owl City in the mainstream was 2009 and was pretty much a one hit wonder.  His music had much potential but he has released 3 singles since Fireflies and none of them have had any airplay.  I doubt we will see another Owl City hit like Fireflies.  Most people have forgotten about him.

I think music is better so far in the 2010's this year than the past decade and even better than music in 1999. That's just my 2 cents!

I don't know how to fully define 2010 aside from some of the things people have already mentioned on here, but I'd like to tell you what defined it in my life:

*Bringing in the new year in Bremerton
*30th birthday celebration in Seattle(Greek restaurant and clubbing); January
*Working with a job-searching company(DVR) for months with a pair of lack-luster ladies, going thru numerous tests and stuff for months only to get dropped for missing 1 appointment
**(I kind of wanted to be dropped anyway cuz I didn't like them)
*Staying at Lincoln City, OR for Mem-Day Weekend
*Dad installs an intercom through-out the house
*Mom breaks her arm, loses her sister and cat months later
*Finally on Facebook, but only because my friend at FtG was the umpteenth person to tell me to get on it and friend her and her boyfriend.  I enjoyed seeing what my friends from high-school are doing tho(more or less).
*My best friend lost his job after a year(it was temp)...
*2 new kittens, Pawkah and Pawsha, both a mix of gray and brown, real sweet but REAL monsters at times
*Except for this past week, it's been a warmer October than usual over in WesWa (new phrase for Western Washington)

Overall, hasn't been that great a year for me.

One word..."Glee"!

What I notice about fashion in 2010 is a very very dressed up look that greatly contrasts the casual look of the 90's/00's. Men wearing scraves, vests, v neck shirts, sort of a very vague 1940s style, kind of a more formal classic look. And then you have the hiphop fashion which is trying desperately to look as different from the 90's/00's style as possible, taking influences from emo fashion(skinny jeans on men, graphic tees) mixed with a colorful neon spin(I also see alot of females wearing purple/pink skinny jeans too). If a hiphop guy in say 2003 or 2004(hell maybe even 2007) was wearing that stuff he would get laughed at so bad. Basically the fashion trends I notice in 2010 is that things are trying to move away from the 90's/early-mid 00's fashion.

Reality Shows.

Traditional rap and rock all but disappeared from the mainstream. It's now nearly all electro and dance-pop, with the occasional Taylor Swift country song here and there. I'm a synth player and I actually like dance music, so I don't mind.

Alternative hiphop.

The final death of what was left of gangsta rap.

A much more dressed up and clean look, as Emman pointed out. More fitting clothes.

Pop culture seems to be gradually heading back to maturity, in contrast to the trashy pop culture of the 00s.

Lots and lots of neon.

Plaid.

Bigger hair on girls (especially high school girls).


I think a lot would agree that 2000s pop culture sucked and the 90s (which was milked to death throughout the 00s) ended well over a decade ago, so it's time to move on to new things. 2010 has already felt quite different from both decades, and we're only one year in. When you look at the music and fashion of 2006 and the music and fashion of 2010 it's pretty amazing how much change there's been in only a few years. The 10s will be a very different decade from the 00s and 90s pop culturally.
