What are you basing this on ? "If the past is an indicator, the next decade won't really arrive until around 2013."
2014 Hmm.. If we are still around: More technological advances, continued political unrest in the middle east. I guess I'm not going out on a limb here.

I have a feeling that 2014 will be a bad year for me, because its the Year of the Horse, which is what I am (I was born in 1978). According to the Chinese, the year that matches the sign of your birth year will be full of bad luck. So far, 1990 and 2002 have proven that to be true :(.

And Kennedy was assassinated in Nov. 1963, so he couldn't have started doing anything in 1964 (other then perhaps decaying (sorry that was in poor taste) :-\\

If the past is an indicator, the next decade won't really arrive until around 2013. So in reality we are still living in the world of the 00's. As a take off of the streetview of 2000's thread, do you have any theory or prediction as to what the world may be like in 2014?
The main reason why I choose 2014 is because that is when I predict this decade to truly start.
1954- Roll and Roll is invented
1964- Kennedy, Kent State, and the Beatles start the counter culture of the 60's.
1974- Disco begins
1983\84- New Wave replaces the defunct disco culture which last until about 1982
The 90's- The only decade I've found that doesn't fit
2003\04- Boy bands and pop princesses of the late 90's fall out of favor and web 2.0 kicks in.
Actually 1993/94 I felt the cultural beginnings of what the 90's were known for, like alternative rock and gangsta rap, which replaced the 80's style pop and hair metal that was around in the late 80's and early 90's. Even though the de facto beginning of grunge was late 1991 when Nirvana's album was released, I felt that it grew in popularity in 1993/94 with Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, etc.

Actually, decades almost always "begin" in the second year of the decade.
1971 - by this point, the hippie and antiwar protests of the late 60s were dying off as a phased withdrawal was occurring from Vietnam. Nixon was pleased to see the antiwar demonstrations were declining in size by this point.
1981 - MTV starts. That alone is enough to change the decade.
1991 - Grunge becomes popular, Soviet Union collapses, and some other things
2001 - 9/11, more Urban style music becoming popular, and some other things
But really, this is all speculation. I'm sure that if our calendar were five years off and 1996 was 1991, we would find trends in that year that start off the "new decade".

True, but I'd argue that the years of '2 and '3 are pretty cuspy and it is usually a '3 or '4 where the new culture begins without any influences from the past decade. For example, there was still disco songs in 1982 and Grunge type-angst music in the 00s until 2003(until a lot of major bands broke up, including the Christian grunge band Creed).

I think the 80's culture was mostly gone by 1992. Big hair still floated around past 1992, though. But not quite as outrageous. Big hair was rare in the late 90's.

I'll be 26 by the end of 2014, but I'll be 25 for most of the year.
40 isn't old, but it's when you realize that you're not young anymore. So I guess you are right. It IS frightening!

and I remember when I was in my 20's,not even looking forward to my 30's but now I'm nearing 40 in just a couple of years from now.

I think the 00s were a mixture of previous decades. The politics were similar to the 70's. The hair was similar to the 70's. The clothes were a combination of the 60's, 70's and 80's. As far as the overall general feel, I'm not sure.

So, now that it’s 2018 and were heading towards the end of the decade, what do you think? Was 2014 the cultural start of the 10?
I personally disagree. I see 2013/late 2012 as the first real 2010s years that had no late 2000s holdovers. It was also when a lot of social media apps started to take off like snapchat and vine.

The cultural start of the 2010s was 2009 and late 2008.
