As long as I'm on a Singularity kick, you're all gonna wanna stop what you're doing an read Vernor Vinge's 2007 novel Rainbows End. (Setting is the pre-singularity, in Vinge's technological timeline, perhaps as early as 10-20 years from now.)
I skipped the whole social networking part of Web 2.0, because I don't see any value-add to living in a fishbowl. I'd make the privacy tradeoff in a heartbeat if I can get augmented reality to make that fishbowl interesting.

Well despite the big "Like" drive being implimented by Facebook, I'm already reading FB's topple in the wind (circa early 2006). I say this because whenever I see an address by a famous person, group, etc being advertised, Twitter is always mentioned and Facebook increasingly less.
Zuck and Facebook have been in the news quite a bit lately.
Maybe Zuckerberg's finally overplayed his hand; the past few weeks have seen even non-geeks learning about what he really thought about his users right from day one.
Maybe Facebook's vision of radical transparency falls flat on its face when people realize that The Friend of My Friend Is Not My Mother.
It's none of Facebook's business who your friends are. It's none of Facebook's business what you're reading.
The Next Big Thing is a replacement for centralized social networking on proprietary closed systems. The model itself is flawed: no centralized provider of social networking can be trustworthy, because the resources required for centralization demand commercialization and monetization. The only way to make enough money to run the servers is to sell the users' privacy out to the highest bidder.
The next big thing? The next big thing is when we collectively decide to let Facebook wither on the vine with the centralized giants of the past, like Livejournal and Myspace. It's time for secure, distributed, peer-to-peer social networking, where the encrypted data resides on machines that you and your friends already own.
A few thousand P2P computers eviscerated RIAA's business model in six years. Let's see if a few million P2P computers can't do the same to Zuckerberg's business model in six months. Join the Diaspora.

Maybe the next generation's rebels will be bold and have peer-to-peer social networking by meeting in the woods around a fire and talking to each other in a whisper. No machines needed. (just a fantasy of mine)

Or we could do it the hard way. Hey, Fallout: New Vegas was fun, too!

I've heard about Diaspora a while ago and was intrigued. However at the time it seemed to still be in development. I clicked the link to see what it had turned into and go sorta "rickrolled". Is this on purpose or was the link taken over, and or a sign that the project failed?
Diaspora is still sorta-alive, but the development community got sorta-sidetracked. My initial optimism on Diaspora was far too early.

Whether it be with FZuckerberg or the Google, your data will be assimilated. In defense of the Goog, they're a hell of a lot less evil about this than Zuckerberg, and seem to be genuinely trying to do what Failbook was supposed to do, namely find a way to monetize social media without being so damn creepy about it.
Insofar as Zuckerberg refuses to acknowledge the reality that people compartmentalize their lives into "things they share with family", "things they share with people they boink", "things they share with friends from high school/college", "things they share with co-workers", and "things they share with potential future employers", Google+ has a shot at it.
