Subject: The offical Glenn Beck says silly stuff thread

Written By: JamieMcBain on 08/08/10 at 1:19 am

From now on, any venting about the Beckster, and stuff will be combined into one thread.

To prevent over crowding, and stuff.

Just to give everyone, a heads up, and all.

Beck's "Planet of the Apes" remark was certainly in bad taste, but what gets me is calling the union movement a special interest when it represents the interests of the vast majority of americans.

I think Glenn Beck meant and I could be mistaken is that the union is a hige special interest for the democratic party.

No the unions aren;t big in private business but in most state governments or government-related services they are I think(i.e. public sector) For example here in New Jersey where I live the public works unions with state government and teachers are a big interest. Also, the public works unions are pretty much tied to the Democratic Party in New Jersey.

Not really...  In theory, unions are supposed to serve the interests of the common worker, but what typically happens is that union management becomes yet another bureaucracy that siphons money from the people they supposedly represent for their own profit.

Also, unions make it far less enticing for companies to move to an area when they know they don't have to deal with the same obstacles in other areas.  They also encourage multinational corporations to outsource more.  Unions are also a large part of why GM is falling.

What typically works better for the interests of a working class is for the government to set specific labor laws that protect all workers across the board.  This way, workers are no longer dependent on unions to protect them.

While there is some truth to what you say, it is something of an exaggeration.  Mostly it depends on the union.  Mine (the AFT) was very representative.  As to outsourcing, sure, high wages encourage it, but should workers accept low wages to prevent it?  That has been tried, as in the New  England textile industry.

We have labor laws going back to the National Labor Relations act, followed by Taft-Hartly and Landrum-Griffin.  So workers can't rely on Gov't to protect them, especially when repubs are in power.

Alan Greenspan always said we need worker insecurity to keep corporate profits high.  Of course, General Motors did not go bankrupt when 1/3 of the workforce -- including all auto workers -- was unionized.  The heydey for GM was under Eisenhower, you know, Ike the commie!  Corporate taxes were far higher and the top marginal income tax rate was over 90%.  The CEO of GM would have been delighted to pay 28%, but in 1955, he wasn't exactly missing any meals!

Now union workers are 7% of the private sector -- even lower than the national unemployment rate, which stands officially at 9.5%.  Hmmmm...

Anyway, there is no point in starting a silly Glenn Beck thread.  His show is silly from start to finish every night.

I'm with Mac on this one. I was a Teamster for 5 years and yeah, I didn't feel like they were exactly representing us. Every time YRC asked for any kind of concession that had to be put to a vote, the union was always enthusiastically behind it. And as far as unions representing "the interests of the vast majority of the American people?" Please. The only people whose interests the Teamsters represented were those who had been in the union for 20 years or more. The rest of us could just F.O.A.D. for all they cared, and they let us know it.

It's possible that I might get called back off layoff in the next few years, but there's no way I'm going back there.

I won't say I'll never work for a union again, but I'm highly skeptical and, to be honest, rather jaded by the whole experience.

We watched the Glenn Beck show yesterday for as long as we could stomach it (about 10 minutes if that long). He had a bunch of teenagers in his audience and was "teaching" them about the Constitution & Declaration of Independence. It really made me sick because he was feeding them LIES about the mortar that holds our country together. So, you have to get the young, feed them a bunch of b.s. and then we have the next generation of ignorant people to follow these @$$holes.

And interesting quote from Beck about the rally.....

"It was not my intention to select 8-28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. It is the day he made that speech. I had no idea until I announced it," he said on his radio show in June, soon after the announcement of the rally.

"Whites don't own Abraham Lincoln. Blacks don't own Martin Luther King. Those are American icons, American ideas, and we should just talk about character, and that's really what this event is about. It's about honoring character," Beck said.

Sure, whatever, Glenn.

We should keep this quote, however more in mind....

"Patriotism is the last vestige of a scoundrel."

Bob Herbert today:

America Is Better Than This
By BOB HERBERT
Published: August 27, 2010

America is better than Glenn Beck. For all of his celebrity, Mr. Beck is an ignorant, divisive, pathetic figure. On the anniversary of the great 1963 March on Washington he will stand in the shadows of giants — Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Who do you think is more representative of this nation?

Consider a brief sampling of their rhetoric.

Lincoln: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

King: “Never succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter.”

Beck: “I think the president is a racist.”

...

Beck is a provocateur who likes to play with matches in the tinderbox of racial and ethnic confrontation. He seems oblivious to the real danger of his execrable behavior. He famously described President Obama as a man “who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.”

I agree with the foregoing posts.

Beck told Forbes magazine he doesn't "give a flying crap" about politics and he is in it for money.

I wish it were that simple.  Then Beck could be merely cynical.  But there's something else.  Our schools do not teach Lincoln or MLK beyond a few cursory reasons they are "American icons."  Therefore, it is easy for propagandists -- such as Beck -- to confound the people as to what either man stood for.  "Social justice" and "economic justice" are unpatriotic in Beck's book.  He is quite explicit in his intent to seize MLK and Lincoln for the right-wing.  Beck will take quotes out of context in order to trick the ignorant into thinking MLK would have approved of cutting foodstamps in order to give tax breaks to oil billionaires, and the ill-educated public will believe it.

Beck would say I'm just one of those liberal elites ("elite" even though he's got fifty million dollars and I've got diddley-squat), and I think Jack and Diane from the Heartland are "dummies."  I don't.  There is a difference between stupidity and a lack of education.  I'm the first to say I should know far more about history than I do.  Realizing it is half the battle.

Economic royalists such as the Koch Brothers, who funded Beck's shindig, don't want Jack and Diane to have the education necessary to smell B.S. when propagandists such as Beck and Hannity shovel it out.  If you're from a rich family, you get to go to a 40K/year prep school and get a real education.  If you are from a poor family, you get NCLB education, which is little more than rote memorization of prescribed facts and figures for the big test.  The last thing the criminal class of counterrevolutionary* royalists want is for hoi poloi such as you and me to understand their nefarious schemes.

::)

* They (and by they I mean them) are against the ideals of the American Revolution.  Joe Stalin was all for the working man too, you know!

A couple of questions, Mr. Beck.

1)  Which God do you want us to turn back to?  Last time I checked, America is filled with dozen's of religions, some may not even worship the same concept of God.

2)  Does this mean your speech apply only to Conservatives, and no one else?

3)  So this mean you want a return to Colonial America?

Glenn Beck's way--Christianity influenced USA--is the way of the future. Secularism and Liberalism are dead in every sense.
We will be the Christian United States within this century. You will see the end of all forms of government aid programs, abortions rendered illegal, evolution being thrown out of school books. The wave is coming. Glennbeckistan is on it's way, fast.

We will be the Christian United States within this century. You will see the end of all forms of government aid programs, abortions rendered illegal, evolution being thrown out of school books. The wave is coming. Glennbeckistan is on it's way, fast.

I am so glad, that I live in Canada, and not Glennbeckistan.

No, that's a rule 34 invocation on Barney Frank and Jesus.  Don't let Rick Santorum hear about it or he'll want to be part of the Photoshop too.  Not that he has much choice.

Oh, the DK's already did "FrankenChrist."  I was thinking of Al Franken as the new messiah!
