We had the G-20 here in Picksburgh last year.

The cops pretty much kicked ass and took names, and as a result there was not the violent mayhem that's been seen at other "G Summits". 

We had a couple of windows broken, that sort of thing.  But the cops came out in a huge show of force and kept incidents down to a pretty small level.

And because of this, the Toronto Blue Jays have had to play their series against the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia, with Toronto maintaining its status as the home team.

What are they protesting?...  I don't get how burning police cars accomplishes anything.

A major mall in Toronto was on lock-down mode for awhile yesterday. People (including a friend who e-mailed me today) were on the streets wanting to get into stores (to get away from potentially being injured...) but the stores would not let anyone in.

The protesters broke window, threw lots of stuff at the media, and the police which has been under scrutiny for (supposedly) acting too harshly in the past, didn't do a whole lot in many instances, although there were some arrests.

Should have taken out the tear gas and let them have it.

Speaking as a Gen-X-er myself, we are not underachievers.  We learned what our elders wanted us to learn, which really was NOT much.  We tend to vary from tweaked-up burnouts like us and the scary drunks and speed freaks.  I honestly don't know how we managed to achieve the basic competence it took to be an adult !  I sure didn't!

But for coverage of the G20, you can't beat Torontoist.  Two reporters on the inside, multiple reporters on the street, and pretty much impartial coverage throughout.  Calling fouls on both the cops and the black bloc as deserved, plus delivered real-time updates on the locations of the mobs so that people could get out of the way... or pose in front of the burning police cars, as they saw fit :)
