Why?

The hate group known as the Westboro Baptist Church announced on their website that they will picket the Bon Jovi concert in Tampa, Florida on April 17, 2010. Bon Jovi is coming to the St. Pete Times Forum as part of their Circle Tour. Westboro Baptist Church frequently targets groups that promote homosexual agendas, but a listing on the group’s website explains why they’ve selected the Bon Jovi concert to picket.


“These old fools have had access to millions all over the world for nearly 3 decades, but they have not one time told any of them what God requires of them. Why is that? Westboro Baptist Church has been telling you all for almost 20 years what the standard is and that obedience to that standard is not negotiable.”

Fred Phelps is running a bizarre hate cult.  He and his clan do nothing to serve God.  Even the fanatical side of the Christian Right doesn't want anything to do with them. 

Bon Jovi?  I have never heard any Christian organizations complain about Bon Jovi.  There are a few extremists out there who are against ALL rock music.  The lyrics cited above are just commentary or artistic expression.  I've never been a fan of his music, but I don't see any malevolence in Bon Jovi.  For instance, when did Bon Jovi harass the family of a dead soldier at his funeral?  Never.  That was Phelps and co.

This is a rather interesting take on Fred Phelps and his wackaloon family.  Surprisingly, a few of the kids got out of there.  Not surprisingly, the wacko part of the Phelps clan is denying all the abuse accusations from Nate Phelps.

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that it's a lawsuit factory.  They're waiting for someone to snap, lose it, commit a crime such as assault or battery, and to sue for enough money to keep the thing going forever.  As long as the labor is free, they can wait as long as it takes.

It hasn't happened yet.  And it won't, as long as people know to ignore them.

Phelps' success as a professional homophobe says something about our country's priorities.  If his slogan was "God hates n*gg*rs," I think somebody would have done something about Fred a long time ago!
