Subject: "Emissions Free" Bloom Box Energy Wonder
Written By: LyricBoy on 02/25/10 at 1:44 pm
Maybe some of you have seen the recent hoopla about the Bloom Box, which is a fuel cell device that is being promoted like hell won't have it.
Unfortunately, many media outlets have been describing it as an "emissions free" power generation device, which is not true. You feed natural gas into it (natural gas being 75% carbon by weight) and it is combined with oxygen and this reaction releases heat and electricity.
The emissions in fact are water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Below is an interesting link that describes the Bloom Box in terms of comparing its CO2 emissions to the average CO2 emissions from the overall power grid. The Box certainly is not "dirty", but when you compare it to where the grid is presently, it does not really offer a leapfrog emissions reduction. (and certainly it generates far more CO2 than wind, nuclear, or hydro).

Neat technology, but it appears that it needs more development. However, in the end, regardless of how efficient, if it consumes methane then it's gonna emit carbon.

When it comes to energy, something for nothing is the perpetual utopian promise, and it always will be.
If the "bloom box" offers an improvement in efficiency of generation-to-waste ratio, I'll take it.

Oh yeah, there is certainly an appeal for that. They got a long way to go to make it cost efficient though. Present capital cost is $7000 per kilowatt of capacity, which is about twice the construction cost of nuclear power or wind power. :o
Would be a great way to generate power for a remote cabin... run it off a propane tank.
