Moral of the story: Watch who you're gonna pick a fight with because you never know if it's an off-duty cop packing some serious heat :o Seems like a pretty straightforward self-defense case to me, but we shall see...we shall see...

That would have been excessive. I think he did the right thing if it was indeed self-defense.
