We discreetly give China money, China discreetly funnels it to NorK, NorK has a change of heart and releases the two hosta-um... prisoners. Everyone saves face. If we're willing to kowtow, we give the money to directly to NorK. Maybe we have to wait for Kim's successor to do it.
If it's any consolation, they'll be treated better than the average NorK prisoner, whose life expectancy (and that of their family) would be measurable in months. That way, when the hostag(dammit, I keep using that diplomatically-inappropriate word)prisoners are released, they can return to the West and give interviews about how the NorK death camps aren't not as bad as they're made out to be by the running-dog lackeys of US Imperialism.
The depressing thing is that that's the good scenario. NorKs get what they think is a propaganda coup, nobody in the West believes a word of it, but at least the host(I'll shaddap now, Hillary!)prisoners are unharmed.
Maybe Kim Jong-Il is just ronery...

Well, there's that too.

I read they're sending Bill Richardson to try and negotiate the reporters release. If anyone can do it, he can. :)

I have a better idea. Why don't we send Sun Myung Moon to negotiate?
In fact, if they release the hostages, they can keep Sun Myung Moon. ;D

Obviously you don't realize when someone is serious. He's negotiated hostage releases from North Korea before.

Foo Bar paints an interesting and feasible scenario. Sad :(
