the conspiracy theory is that the democrats -- or THE DEMONCRAPS! youre welcome for the shoutout, lterhune -- are actually pushing this meme that rush is the de facto leader of the republicans. they have such a leadership vacuum in the party right now and every time some prominent republican breaks bad on rush they have to go apologize to him, so it's easy to do. but really rush is sorta chugging along the way he always has.

it's happened twice recently, i forget who the other cat was. but the republicans are trying to moderate, i think, they keep trying to dress rush down and they get so much angry mail from dittoheads it scares the tar out of em and they have to apologize to him.  ;D

the party's gonna go further to the right before it moves back to the center again, i think. much like what happened to the left in the late 70s/early 80s when reagan locked the libbies in the backyard like an old dog for a decade or so.

Drugs or no, the guy hasn't changed at all in the 15 years I've heard him.  He likes to swagger and shout, but not much else.  He will NOT appear on any program unless there is a contractual stipulation that no dissenting person appear at the same time.  I can't think of anyone else who is granted this privilege.  Pundits frequently do appear on cable news as the sole panelist for a segment, but I can't think of anyone else who flat out refuses to debate.  He wouldn't even show up on a classic FOX panel where it's three conservatives beating up on one liberal.  So what does that tell you about "talent on loan from God"?

Rush got famous for his pontificating skills, not his debating skills.  He can utter rehearsed editorials, but he cannot think on his feet.  When he takes a contrary call on his show, the caller is always a weak spirit who will quail when Rush gainsays him.  His stooges can weed out the combative types. 

The thing is, Limbaugh had 20 million listeners a day at the height of his popularity and the Republican party did anoint him as a spokesman for their message.  Now they look to him for leadership and they will quickly find out he has neither brains nor the balls for the job!

i'm desperate for a token angry ignorant conservative on this board. My Mom has her books on the same shelf as her Rush and Culter books.  My only comfort is knowing that some of the most conservative people have the most open minded kids. :)

Granted, NC is less conservative than it used to be.  Black people here tend to be pretty liberal, and I think the average local white person here is moderate economically (although still pretty conservative socially).

Guilford County is where I'm at.  We used to be a Baptist fundamentalist utopia (or dystopia from my viewpoint), but it seems that we've become more socially open over the years.

You know, I thought Rush's time had come and gone, but his ratings have doubled in the past two weeks. 

His latest contract is for 400 million dollars.  To hear him gripe about taxes and "class envy" puts him at a Louis XVI level of piggishness.  Can anybody reasonably argue he has any perspective on what it's like for the average American?  I mean, among all the self-induced delusions, megalomaniacal wealth, and the piles of dope I guarantee you he's still taking, is there room for a shred of human decency?  Is Rush what the Republicans want as a figurehead of true blue American values?  I guess so.
