Subject: Gun Sales and Fear
Written By: danootaandme on 11/08/08 at 6:00 am
It has been reported that there has been a sharp increase in the sales of guns. The increase has been attributed to the fear by gun people that an Obama presidency will ban the sale and use of guns. I find this disingenuous. There has always been a back and forth about the use and sale of guns. I think what is not being spoken is that this is a fear of a black presidency and the fact that there are people who think that black people are for some reason going to "take over", and even make slaves of white people. This is something that has been fostered by supremacist groups, and lord knows there are more than enough ignorant people in this country who will fall for this crap.

Morons all of them.....Never mind the fact that, we need change so badly in this country. When is the general intelligence level of the people gonna rise? Ever? Maybe I should say enlightenment. After all look at what a stellar job has been done with the Bush administration in charge. Yeah lets stay that course, it worked so well. >:(
The source was probably Fox News!!! I don't believe people in this country could be that ignorant..Wait on the other hand they did elect Bush twice. http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/11/BangHead.gif And there are actually people out there that believe fox news is fair and balanced http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/15/violent1.gif

I keep hoping against hope that the Bill O'Reillys and Rush Limbaughs who take their educations then cater to the lowest common denominator will disappear. They use their credentials to legitimize the fear and hate mongering they espouse. There are those who will use the election of Obama to sway others into their way of thinking by galvanizing the unwarranted fears of an uprising of minorities, and these hate-talk show hosts will help them, and they will do it for the ratings, and I am afraid it will actually get people killed.

I could not agree more, it is shameful the way these idiots use their influence and education to pander to the morons who actually listen and believe them. And all to make money. I hope no one gets killed behind this crap.

I read about this this morning. It just boggles my mind how people are so fearful of President Obama when we had 8 years of people trying to destroy the fabric of our country-namely the Constitution.

Obama said on TV that he thinks the 2nd amendment applies to individuals, but probably not a channel that they were watching. Although it could be more of a reaction to a fear of increased poverty leading to increased robbery.

The Big Bad Obama isn't going to take your guns away from you, but if you're that dumb, you prolly shouldn't be armed at the same time!
:D
Guns haven't had the best PR over the past couple of weeks; the eight-year-old in Westfield, Mass., killed himself with an Uzi under the supervision of adults and this week another eight-year-old in St. Johns, AZ, shot his father and his father's friend to death!

I read what I think is the article and the buying frenzy has mostly been for semi-automatics, which could certainly end up harder to get with the NRA losing influence. What's disturbing is that enough people want semi-automatic weapons for this to be an issue.

I can speak with personal experience that it really is a case of gun rights people freaking out over the possibility of a gun ban. It's not about race....
Granted, I'm very pro-guns myself.

The Dems have only a tenuous hold in those Southern and Mountain areas. It would be political self-sabotage for them to start cracking down on guns.

Phoned my mum in the UK this evening. Couldn't believe that she TOO ... was going along this line ... when I raised the Obama victory with her. Mum definitely ain't stupid ... and she ain't racist either ... but she's older school than me. Her train of thought was something like .. 'Now ... in Britain, we .. the white British people .. are second class citizens .. all these foreigners (of whatever color) are taking over the place, getting handouts, housing, free surgery, etc; .... 'reverse discrimination' ... they're gonna get us back now !
... and that's ^ in spite of being pleased to see Obama won ! Yes, she too worried 'they're gonna take over' ! ::) Somehow, in spite of being President, I don't think Obama runs the whole show single handedly as if ANY president does/did (figureheads mainly) .... and that enough white guys in his admin will make sure he/ they .... the boogie man ... DOESN'T 'take over' ::) ;D
Sorry mum ... and I DO still love you ! :-* ;D

Yes ... I too was stunned/ dismayed .... when Bush managed to get back in. Couldn't fathom it at the time, but I'm led to believe it was largely due to his managing to muddy the waters .... by making gay marriages an issue in THAT election ? Like the fate of the world rested on THAT ? ::)

While I agree that Fox is clearly a biased outlet (like all outlets)...
Please provide a citation of where anybody from Fox News (or any mainstream media outlet) claimed that Obama and the blacks are going to "Take over".
Unfounded accusations like this are the same of what you blame Fox for.

I didn't post the original statement, I merely made an observation from my point of view of what Fox news stands for. IMHO they spin the news in favor of the right and also like to use scare tactics.

No other outlet is on par with FOX for bias!!! It's not even bias; it's straight propaganda.
I never heard anybody in the media suggest blacks were going to take over; however, I don't doubt it's a primal fear in the psychology of some white folks...more than we'd like to admit.

Actually, it was requested because some of the members here simply felt it was inappropriate. Why? Because it isn't always just one person who happens to be looking at the screen. Could be that kids might be in the room, or significant others who may see it for something else.... take your pick. Thanks Macphisto, I thought you took my request light-heartedly. Guess not.

Of course, there is also a much more likely reason why this is happening.
Traditionally when the economy collapses, there are 2 results. One is an increase in crime. This is because the thugs also get more desperate since their easy sources of income are drying up, so they move to more invasive forms of crime. Burglars turn more and more to robbery, or home invasion to get their money.
And as a result (or fear of), more people buy guns to protect themselves. The same thing happened in the early 1990's, and also in the late 1970's. This dates back to even earlier, the 1930's, even the 1870's and beyond. I bet if they checked where these guns are being bought, most are being purchased by residents of larger cities.
Of course, because of some recent decisions by the Supreme Court, some residents of major cities are only now able to purchase guns. I bet that is spiking the numbers as well. When you suddenly have a city the size of Washington DC able to own firearms, just the normal percentage that would own them normally will make a spike when they purchase them all within a short amount of time.
Myself, I have owned a gun for over a decade. And if somebody told me they were going to buy a gun because Obama was going to take them away, I would tell them to go ahead, and keep it next to them in their basement bonb shelter. And to not forget to wear their tinfoil hat.

Great point, Mushroom. :)
I think that same chain effect can even happen with otherwise generally law abiding citizens (that's when it's really tragic) - like if someone gets laid off from work or has bills to pay, that can drive them to rob a bank or steal from friends or something.
I'm kinda on the fence with guns. I'm not as anti-gun as alot of Liberals are, and I have nothing against them for self-defense. But I think it should be tougher to get one. Like background checks, and especially required safety training for anyone who has one in their home. Instead of trying to hide it from kids (which they could still get into anyway if they tried hard enough) they should teach them how dangerous they are, so they know never to go near it. I think curiosity is how alot of those accidents happen.

I think the core of it is fear. A gun in the home or a gun in the purse gives a person a greater sense of security, founded or not.

It was reported that the sky rocketing sales were in the area of assault weapons. This indicates fear. People aren't buying pistols or weapons for hunting, the are buying weapons of mass slaughter.

I'm not too concerned. After reading Bill Clinton's thoughts about how the 1990s gun control fad hurt Democrats so badly in his book, the AWB being allowed to sunset in 2004, and the recent Heller ruling, it seems like gun control is a functionally dead issue politically. Democrats don't want to touch it, which gives Republicans one thing to scare voters with...

"Assault Weapon" is not a real weapon. It is a term thought up by anti-gun people. And an "Assault Weapon" is no more deadly then any other gun.
Want an example? Look at the simple Ruger 10-22. 10 shot semi-automatic .22 calibur rifle. Available all over, a favorite of rabbit hunters and can shooters. Fixed stock, 10 round clip.
Now I take the same rifle, put on a pistol grip, flash suppressor, and bayonet lug. Guess what, it's now an "Assault Rifle". And if you do not believe me, look up the law. You need 3 of a list of 14 items to make a weapon an Assault Rifle. I could also add things like a collapsing stock, scope mounts, larger magazine. Most of those do nothing for the lethality of the weapon.
In fact, they make "sporter" versions of the AK without the things like pistol grip. Just as deadly as the standard AK, but not an "Assault Weapon".
And it is not a surprise those are the fastest rising segment, it is also the cheapest segment. With an import AK running in the $200-500 range, why would you buy a hunting rifle, in the $600+ range?

My father was a hunter, I have friends who hunt, I have shot these weapons. I once belonged to a gun club and know many people who own guns, but, I do not know anyone who would use an AK for hunting anything which they are planning on butchering and eating. That is why they pay for a good hunting rifle.

I knew plenty of people that used Sporter versions of the AK for hunting. I also know people that use Sporter versions of the M-16 for hunting as well. In the same way, I know many people that use the venerable M-1 for hunting.
And another irony, the M-1 is not an assault rifle, but the M-14 is. This once again is because of a few minor modifications (even though the weapons are virtually identicle).
