Guess who won re-election despite his graft conviction

That just gets me. But, I guess it is ok that he is a convicted felon. Now, if he got caught in a sex scandal that would have been a good reason for him to lose his seat. ::)

I heard on CNN some speculation that if Ted Stevens is not able to serve as senator, thus meaning that Sarah Palin would be able to apoint who the new senator is, that Palin may choose herself to be senator.
Dear god, I don't even want to think about that. The fact that Palin is even a possibility for the Republican candiate in 2012 is sad enough.

I have thought about her choosing a senator-and yeah, I have thought of her choosing herself or her husband. ::)

Well, it might not be too b ad. Probably take either one six years just to find Washington, not to mention the Senate. ;)

I hope she's the GOP candidate in '12 and she chooses Todd as her running mate for a Palin/Palin ticket. Yeah, she should definitely appoint herself senator. It could be the beginning of the end for the Republicans in Alaska!

The end for republicans in Alaska? Sure.
All the polls said Stevens and republican U.S. representative Don Youing (R-AK) were supposed to lose. Stevens is probably going to win and Don Young has already won. Obama lost Alaska by a much larger margin than the polls said too.
This comes on the heels of Palin winning the Governorship despite the previous republican governor's corruption. That governor, Frank Murkowski, appointed his own daughter to be a U.S. Senator from that state. She, Lisa Murkowski, was widely-predicted to lose big in 2004 just because of her last name, but she won by five percentage points despite being down by eight points in the polls and is still in the U.S. Senate today.
Alaska is just a heavily red state. The democrats are unpopular there. The people of that state would just rather send a crook like Stevens back to Washington than another useful idiot for Harry Reid.

None of these choices seem to speak at all well for the judgment of the voters.

OK, I spoke to soon...
but the could at least try for better than a governor one who doesn't know the countries of North America...or the days of the week, or the months of the year, or colors! I mean it's like a Mel Brooks movie after a while!

Alaska is basically the short bus state. They'd rather re-elect a felon than elect a Democrat.

Begich has now pulled ahead of Stevens by 3 votes. Looks like the rest of the votes are from Begich areas so Ted might lose.

A little FYI:
A Governor can't appoint themselves into office.
However, they can resign, giving their replacement the instruction that they will appoint them into the office.
In this case, Gov. Pallin can resign, after reaching an agreement with LtGov Sean Parnell that he will appoint her Senator after he assumes office.
For some examples of things like this happening in fiction, check out "Executive Order" by Tom Clancey.

Yes, and the LtGov could also turn around and do whatever he will. It would all depend on if Palin has something on Parnell to induce him not to turn on her.

Nothing even that dire. You simply have both resignation and appointment letters written up in advance. And if one or the other holds out, it is likely that their career would be badly damaged.
And for most politicians, they chance to become Governor would be enough to make the agreement. Both people get to move to a higher office, with no loosers in the deal.

Except, maybe, the people of Alaska, but then they have melted their own iceberg.

I think you overestimate the love of the Republicans in Alaska.
Almost every state in the country had record turnout in this election except Alaska. A state with a hotly contested Senate race and their governor running for VP. On top of a lower than expected turnout, something like 75,000 votes haven't even been counted yet. Alaska is proving it has something in common with Florida, a love for crooked elections. The 2004 elections were contested for years, and eventually the GOP destroyed the evidence.

slowly but surely the votes are getting counted, and Stevens trails by over 2000 votes now. Even with suspicious voter turnout, it still looks like Stevens is going to lose.

What about the Ted Stevens airport? Might as well call it the Dirty Crook airport. I guess that's what's toughest about blowing it in your eighties. You don't get a chance to redeem yourself!
