Subject: your favorite people of the moment

I’m curious, who are the people in the news or public figures who are really inspiring you or catching your attention lately? And I don’t mean lifelong inspirations – I mean folks in the last week or two or month or two who’ve gotten your eye but who you reserve the right later to think, okay, maybe that guy or gal was a dingbat after all. But lifelong inspirations are fine too as long as you’ve given them love in recent days.
My list, in no particular order.
Douglas adams. Author of hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy and a bunch of other stuff, I’ve found myself in possession of a lot of his books on audiotape and I just listen and listen over and over again, because my car radio totally doesn’t work. I’ve been amazed at how much more I get out of his work when I should by all rights be sick of it by now, and he died tragically just before 911 happened… I would have been really curious to know what his take would be on the events of the past few years and he would have been delighted, I think, to see the rise of this whole militant atheist movement that’s happened in the past few years. Douglas! Don’t be dead!
Naomi klein. Author of “no logo” and just a clever, clever chick – wrote a book recently called “the shock doctrine’ that made a bunch of waves and I think is inspirational in terms of how it lets you see political events of late in a larger context. It’s a bit complicated but the gist of it is, up until recently physical disasters tended to equate with financial disasters (look up the “guns to caviar index” on the internet) but lately entrepreneurs have found a way to make disasters be profitable to a small but powerful segment of the population – with the result that disasters have proliferated. I think it’s a groundbreaking book and you should check out some of her public speeches, there’s a bunch on youtube and she’s quite eloquent and likeable. Cute, too.
David icke. Thoroughly insane conspiracy theorist guy who thinks the world is being run by an alien race of reptilian monsters in human skin. Folks who want to believe him keep trying to interpret this assertion metaphorically – and doing so, it’s hard to argue that the neocons AREN’T, in a sense, evil reptiles in human skin – but he assures us that, no, he quite literally believes this. And yet everything else he says is clever, challenging, often funny and often disturbing. I was up way too late last night watching a speech he gave in England a few years ago and thinking if he ever gave a tour of America I’d love to check him out. A david icke symposium would actually be a good first date if I was interested in dating – you’d winnow out the sourpuss girls in no short order and a gal who could deal with david icke cold would be an interesting chick to go on a second date with.
Ron paul – I think a bunch of his opinions are dicey but I like the movement he’s managed to create, he’s made a lot of people excited about politics again and that’s no mean feat. Plus he’s one of the few people who’s able to go on Sunday talk shows and refer to the obvious fact that the USA is sliding into fascism.

Ron Paul. Lately, I've been reading more about him. Some of his opinions are a bit out there, but I like that I know where he stands...
David Icke? I take it I can find him on YouTube. I might have to check that out tonight.

Hrmmmm... lemme think.
Even though I am not an NDP partisan, I really like Jack Layton. He's got such a great sense of humour, it's almost impossible to dislike him. Not to mention I think his party is such a necessity in Parliament, even if they never govern.

He's always eager to bust out that guitar.
And I gotta say, still a fan of Strombo... sort of. Nobody's that big of a fan of George Stromboulopoulos. It's like, you watch The Hour, you enjoy it, you think he's a pretty cool fella, but Strombo just lacks that sort of charisma that makes you freak out if you meet him. You'd say hi, and then it would be over. You know, no big whoop.

Howard Dean - Always liked him.
Arlen Spector - The only guy I've heard speak of checks and balances.
Mary Bono - Congresswoman from California. Republican with brains. (Yep, Sonny's widow)
Thom Hartman - Air America commentator.
Bill Richardson - Still think he should be president. >:(

I've been into Animal Collective, a band.
Dave Eggers and Allen Ginsberg are literary folk who've kept me intrigued.

I'm becoming a big fan of Pat Condell. He's a very irreverent comedian in the U.K. that enjoys antagonizing neocons, politically correct liberals, and militant Muslims.

if it weren't for the millions of dollars, hundreds of lawsuits, and dozens of dead people over the past few decades, I'd feel better about laughing at the guy trying to convince his followers that he could tell whether the tomato hooked up to the galvanometer was trying to lie to him or not. It doesn't stop me from laughing at him, though. Kudos to the original Photoshoppers of all three.

i saw a guy who had a good point about fox -- which is that with their whole political slant falling out of favor (i.e., this whole far right divisive political thing they do) a lot of their hosts suddenly realize that they might have to try and find work someplace else pretty soon. and deep down they know what they're doing isn't actual journalism, so their manner of screaming at their guests has taken on an air of desperation -- "no! we ARE serious journalists! don't fox me bro! after the fox network starts laying us all off i WILL be able to work in this town again!"
