Subject: The Voters of Gee's Bend
Written By: danootaandme on 09/24/06 at 7:59 am
In 1962 the 15 minute ferry across the Alabama River to the town of Gee's Bend was halted to prevent the overwhelmingly desparetely poor african-american residents from voting. Now, 44 years later, they are getting relief. One must wonder if this would have happened if the publicity surrounding the Quilt makers of Gees Bend hadn't spotlighted this problem. Let us not believe that this is an isolated incidence.

I really can't believe they'd wait 44 years to do this (well, actually I can, but I was hoping to be idealistic for at least once in my life!)

Yes, I heard something about what happened to the Gee's Bend ferry back then. I also saw a television spot about the Gee's Bend quilters. Very impressive craft they've honed over the years. I guess there's not a heck of a lot to do in Gee's Bend.
Funny, I've heard sever GOP pundits over the past five years extol the virtues of making it as hard as possible for people to vote. Something about proving you really want to. I mean, it shouldn't be hard for Republicans to vote. They've alraedy proved their character and work ethic by dint of being Republicans. It's Democrats who need the challenge. The big government nanny state makes everything so easy for the lazy Democrats, that we must do them a favor and make the work hard to partake in civics. Otherwise they won't appreciate their freedoms.
Hey, I'm not making this crap up, this how GOP strategists really talk!
