Subject: Kinky Friedman For Governor of Texas

Many may or may not know, that Texas born and bred musician Richard "Kinky" Friedman is running for Governor of Texas. It is required in this state to collect 45,000 signatures to get on the ballot. Kinky recently turned in 169, 000 signatures. It is going to be a four-way race between Kinky Friedman(independent), Gov. "Good hair" Rick Perry(Republican), Carol Keaton-Strayhorn(independent), and whoever the Democrats trot out. Mr. Friedman in hypothetical polls between the prospective candidates, has scored over 20%. He has a genuine shot at going to the governor's mansion. A lot of people in this state(even a lot of Republicans) are fed up with Rick Perry.
Kinky is running on a platform of three main issues:
Why the hell not?
Texas politics stinks.
The parties sell themselves to big donors, lobbyists control the legislature's agenda, and the top fundraising groups in the state are being indicted for money laundering. Corruption and big money have such a chokehold that the two major parties blew $100 million in the last governor's race to elect a candidate to a job that pays $100,000 a year. And for all that money spent, less than 30% of us bothered to show up at the polls.
Why? Because it's hard to stand in line at the ballot box when neither candidate promises anything more than politics as usual. Texans are the most independent people in America, and if we're going to be inspired, the inspiration will come from someone unafraid to deal in new ideas and honest answers, an independent leader who lets the people call the plays instead of dancing to the tune of the money men.
That kind of leader is never going to look or sound like a politician. He won't steer by image polls, speak in hollow phrases approved by focus groups, or show up in hand-tailored suits.
You'll know him when you see him

Texas Governor: Perry (R) Still at 40%
April 4, 2006
Rick Perry (R) 40%
Chris Bell (D) 17%
Carole Keeton Strayhorn 19%
Kinky Friedman 15%
April 20, 2006--Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) is enjoying a growing lead in a four-way campaign to keep his job.
For the third straight election poll by Rasmussen Reports, Perry earns support from 40% of Texas voters. Normally, this level of support would be devastating for an incumbent, but nothing is normal in Texas this year. Two Independent candidates join Democrat Chris Bell in there desire to replace Perry. All three earn between 15% and 19% of the vote.
The biggest change from our previous survey is the receding threat to Perry from Carole Keeton Strayhorn. Strayhorn, who is currently the state Comptroller, initially intended to challenge Perry in the Republican Primary.
When that route looked unappealing, she left the GOP to run as an independent. In February, before the Democrats had settled on their candidate, Strayhorn attracted 31% of the vote and had pulled within nine points of the incumbent. Now, with 19% support, Strayhorn is at her lowest level of support since entering the race.
Strayhorn's presence in the race has added an element of drama in what was expected to be an easy walk to re-election for Perry. However, it has also created difficulties for Democrat Chris Bell to draw attention to his campaign. Bell, now at 17% in the poll, has less than half the support of Governor Perry.
In Texas, 56% say that they are following the immigration debate "very closely." Sixty-five percent (65%) believe the U.S. should control its border and enforce existing laws before considering further reform. Sixty percent (60%) agree with a policy goal of welcoming everyone who is not a national security threat, a criminal, or intends to live off the U.S. welfare system.

We need more people in the world named Kinky. It's an underrated name. We need even more of those people in elected office. Who cares if he's good.......it would just be cool to say that your governor's name is "Kinky".
