Subject: Last Year Where it was "Acceptable" to Own a CRT TV?

Written By: Slim95 on 05/09/22 at 10:24 pm

What do you think was the last year where you could've owned a CRT/cube TV without being embarrassed about it?

That year hasn't come yet.  Lots of video game collectors proudly own a CRT so they can play older games on it.  Plus, anyone who is embarrassed to own a CRT has bigger issues than just that TV lol

I had mine until 2011 when I was getting ready to move. I couldn't even give it away so I ended up donating it to the 2nd hand store.

Had a 25 inch CRT purchased in 1990 or 91 (our main TV).  Used it heavily until it conked out in 2010(?).  It had "picture in picture"!  :D  Used it 20 years - not bad.  When replacing it with our flat screen we had to change out the furniture we housed it in.  Wasn't happy about that.  But we came up with something pleasing.  Sadly that TV only lasted until 2018 - not long enough if you ask me, as that first flat screen was no "cheapie".  >:(  But it is nice having a smart TV now.

From what i remember most people still had CRT TVs in the early/mid 2000s it was around 2006/2007 when flat screen TVs started becoming more affordable and showing up in peoples homes.  The last CRT TVs were made and sold  around 2008.

2012, maybe some of 2013 since it was still during the Xbox 360/PS3 era which both had A/V cables. CRTs were often used as "spare" TVs in the early '10s.

My family and I had one up until 2012 at our old apartment prior to moving to another apartment in another city in August of that year.

Funnily enough, I got one for my bedroom (the exact same model that was thrown away right before we had to move, albeit with a broken built in DVD player that won't open) in May 2021 when my small flatscreen TV broke (it could no longer play audio for some reason), though by that point, I was an oddball here as flat screens had definitely become the norm by then.

Despite the DVD tray refusing to open, I love the CRT TV I have in my room and for watching DVDs, I can always either just use my portable DVD player or buy a standalone DVD player that you can hook up to the TV (or alternatively, I could purchase a PS2 from eBay and use that as a DVD player once it's hooked up to the the TV).

We won a TV in a raffle in about 2006 and it was a CRT. I rather suspect the shop was clearing out the last of the stock. The following year we moved to the US. Prior to moving we tried to give away the TV, but it was really difficult. No one was interested in this style of television even though it was only a year or so old.
