Subject: I Hate 2006

I feel like that year is the year everything started to suck. 2008 is only slightly worse.

Agreed. Basically it was the 2022 of that time, or I should say 2022 is the new 2006. I have to disagree about 2008 though, I thought that was the best year since 2005. 2007 was slightly better than 2006 as well, especially the later part.

Hard disagree. 2006-2013 were the last bright spot in modern history. There were also some real killer, knock-it-out-of-the-park movies in that stretch of time. In fact, it's the last stretch of truly great movies I remember before Hollywood got on its nostalgia franchise addiction.

I liked the 2008-2012 period. Just wasn't a fan of 2006 and 2007 for personal reasons, but I'll definitely take those years over now.

Similarly, for personal reasons I hate 2005, but I'd take that year over now. (And that's why I probably won't respond to this thread again unless someone asks me something, because I hate 2005 THAT much that I would NEVER hate 2006).

Come to think of it, 2006 didn't really have any major disasters that I can recall. There were no major wars, no notable natural disasters, no notable mass shooting incidents, no pandemics, and the economy was yet to be in a recession. The only thing I remember is the immigration reform that was discussed and debated ad nauseum. It was just a really bland year for pop culture with mediocre sounding music and a shortage of good movies and new TV series. Also my personal life wasn't that great, not particularly bad, just not as good as the years before and after.

That's crazy that 2 of the 5 on that list were in Seattle. Still nothing on the level of the Virginia Tech one in 2007. Iraq and Afghanistan were ongoing for more than a decade. Speaking of Iraq, one notable event was the execution of Saddam Hussein at the end of the year, and I'm sure most people weren't upset about that one. There was also the bird flu outbreak.

Depending on what you define as the 2000's. The decade was split in to two halves: the first half was the McBling era and the second half is the electro/dance pop era.

Only if you define it in terms of music. 2006 was the beginning of an amazing string of both big budget and award-winning movies like the Pirates sequels, late Harry Potter, Munich, Jarhead, Kingdom of Heaven, etc.

Actually most of the movies listed here are 2005 movies, except for the Pirates sequels. Which Harry Potter? I personally liked Goblet of Fire the best, the one with Robert Pattinson's acting debut. Also The 40 Year Old Virgin kicked off the Judd Apatow comedies, with more movies in the years to follow such as Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express, etc.

Wow, the last 5 years in a row were bad? I'm sorry to hear that. Mine are more spread out, like 1990, 1998, 2013-2014, and 2022. Looking back, in some ways 2003 was worse for me than 2006.

In 2006 everything started to decline. You've noticed hints of the decline in 2005 but it didn't hit you until '06. You had corny shows and movies like Hannah Montana and Highschool Musical come out, lame faster music, people started socializing less and staying indoors to play video games, things started to become more high-tech. There was less of that down to earth vibe the 2000s are known for. Everything just seemed to change for the worst.

It was like a hybrid of both. The later part might have been more like the early 2010's with the election of Barack Obama, the debut of Lady Gaga, and the economic collapse; but the early part was still more core 2000's. 2009 was more isolated and had little to no core 2000's elements left, and can be easily confused with 2010, can pretty much be twinned with that year.

This explains it:
Why Time Sometimes Flies or Drags: How the Brain Creates the Experience of Time
https://scitechdaily.com/why-time-sometimes-flies-or-drags-how-the-brain-creates-the-experience-of-time/#:~:text=Time%2Dsensitive%20neurons%20fatigue%20and,skew%20our%20perceptions%20of%20time.
Time-sensitive neurons fatigue and skew our perception of time.
On some days, time flies by, while on others it seems to drag on. A new study from JNeurosci reveals why: time-sensitive neurons get worn out and skew our perceptions of time.
Neurons in the supramarginal gyrus (SMG) fire in response to a specific length of time. If repeatedly exposed to a stimulus of a fixed duration, the neurons fatigue. Since other neurons continue firing normally, our subjective perception of time becomes skewed.
Hayashi and Ivry measured brain activity with fMRI as human participants engaged in a time comparison task. Healthy adult participants viewed a visual adaptor (a grey circle) for a set length of time, 30 times in a row. After this adaptation period, they were shown a test stimulus and indicated its duration. If the adaptor duration was long, the participants underestimated time; if the adaptor duration was short, they overestimated time. Activity in the SMG decreased when the adaptor and test stimulus were similar in length, indicating neuron fatigue. The extent of skewed time perception correlated with how much the activity in the SMG decreased — greater fatigue led to greater time distortion.

I feel the same exact way, this year has to be one of the longest years of my life. Probably due to personal events that went down this year (a big move, a few changes of jobs and just work place environments that weren't the greatest). But I do feel that this year went by a little slower than 2021 in my opinion.

I think it's the combination of personal events (with my wife being Ukrainian, that war is personal for us as it caused a lot of stress and pressure, and having to live life one day at a time) plus a dull pop-culture lacking in good music to listen to and movies/series to watch.
2006 was the same way for pop-culture, although I did get the Wii which helped pass the time through the final stretch/holiday season of that year. Coincidentally one of the only games that came out this year that enjoyed was Nintendo Switch Sports.

2006 was an ok year. Music was more hip hop club and Alt Rock. I think for me music got better between 2008-2009 because 2006-2007 was a snooze fest. Reality tv became even trasher around that time. 80s nostalgia was in full swing and people wanted to wear neon head bands.

Actually 2006 didn't even that much hip-hop. 2007 had a lot more such as Walk It Out, This is Why I'm Hot, Crank Dat Soulja Boy, etc. In 2006 it was mostly pop like JT, Nelly Furtado, and Fergie or ballads like James Blunt and Daniel Powter. There was some good alt rock like All-American Rejects and The Fray.
2007 was an improvement especially in the later part. I liked the old Kanye West of the time with his Graduation album, the third of his first three albums which were the best. Also the R&B artist The-Dream, who also wrote the Umbrella song performed by Rihanna.

2026 is the next Year of the Horse so historically those have been rough ones for me, particularly 1990 and 2014. 2002 at least the 2nd half was better, but first half was rough. At least 1996 and 1986 were good for me.

I also won't say that hated it as I've had worse years, including 2022, 2014, 1998, and 1990. It is however one of my least favorite years of that decade, only the post 9/11/01-2003 period was a bit worse for me. 2006 was just bland pop-culture wise with the lack of good music, movies, and TV shows; and my work situation wasn't so great either.

I've been listening to my 2007 playlist as I tend to focus on one year at a time. 2006 was mostly forgettable with a few exceptions like Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, All American Rejects, Panic at the Disco and a handful of others. It was equally that way with movies, TV series, and gaming until the Wii and PS3 came out during the holiday season.

I've been listening to music from each year on spotify starting from 1980 onwards. I'm currently on 2006. I do agree this year seems to be the tipping point for when there was more bad than good. If I do listen to music from the rest of the 2000s, it'll be select songs.
I have my own playlist on Spotify and with nearly 10,000 songs I am almost done with reaching that goal, most likely by the end of this year. It took me about 6 years to get almost every genre.
