Anything before about 2006 or 2007 seems retro to me.

Retro: imitative of a style or fashion from the recent past.
2004 is a long time ago, not recent.

It's 17 years ago.

The scary thing is in 2004 Bowling For Soup released the song 1985, which seemed forever ago at the time. Soon it will be 2023 when 2004 will be just as old as 1985 was in 2004.

That is mathematically correct. It's how the measurement of linear time operates. I'm not sure what's scary about it. 1985 didn't seem "forever ago" to me in 2004. I still had shirts from 1985 in 2004. They were nice shirts too.

For me it does since I was still a child in 1985, while I was in my 20's in 2004. The flow of time feels a lot faster as you get older.

So therefore we can conclude that "retro" is absolutely subjective. So any questions about what is "retro" and what isn't are basically meaningless, because everybody will have a different answer, depending on where they are on the time/age continuum.

I can guarantee the time does fly by quickly, especially when I will be 'singing' the famous Paul McCartney song on my next birthday.

It's interesting because there is also a song titled 2002 and that came out 3 years ago. But the 1985 song had a lot more nostalgic retro aspects in it.

For me, when I look back at my life in 1985, 1968 would have been a long time ago in 1985 (17 years), but today when I look back 17 years ago (2004) it seems like a year or two away. Time flies as you get older and even 17 years ago seems fairly recent. Y2K (to me) doesnt feel that long ago. If I were younger, in my 20s, I'd think Y2K was a long time ago

Carlos & I got married in 2003. It seems like it was just yesterday but also, it seems like we have been married forever.

I was born in March of that year, so i can't really say much since I was a baby during that time. From what I have seen on YouTube, it looks to be starting to trespass in retro territory. CRT analog commercials were more common, and the cars are starting to look older and more outdated.
It's extremely dated for sure, but I wouldn't call it retro just yet. I would give it until 2024 when it becomes 20 years ago.

It isn't retro yet but it's scary how close we are to it being retro. I remember 2004 like yesterday. But it will be 20 years ago in another couple of years. Pretty crazy.

And I can also remember about The collapsing of The Twin Towers how that was 20 years ago, it doesn't seem like it. :o

Yep! It's funny how time just goes on! In just 178 more days I'll be legally grown haha.
It must feel nice being born in the '80s though! Sure wish I could have gotten to experience it. But you know, I'm cool with being born in '04. Haha!

Yes '04 was a great year! It wasn't much of a great year for me personally, but everything else was. My nephew was born in '04 as well....you are all growing up so fast! Lol.

I, too, turned 24 that year. That's also when I became a registered user on this site.

Forget the 80s. they were synthetic. I can tell by your name you would have loved the 60s and 70s. I certainly did! 8)

Yes, I absolutely would have. I wish I spent my childhood in the '60s, and my teenager/young adult years in the '70s. Would have been really nice.
2 of my wish-to-be born in birth years are 1957, or 1977. The prime years for either a '60s or '80s childhood! Haha!

The 80s were beautiful and happy. People went to the cinemas to watch films, we had big, bulky electronics lol. The toys were eye catching and so fun. And there was a hint of futurism in the middle if the decade. We had the best music videos and MTV in its early days. The artists were beautiful: Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Adam Ant just to name a few. Growing up in the 1980s was the best! :)

Yeah, and also Michael Jackson was the biggest artist of the decade, haha. It really did seem like a fun time back then. Favorite movie from that decade is BTTF. Legendary movie for sure!!

In 2020, 2004 was the same length of time ago as 1988 was in 2004. I was living in both of those years in 2020, as unfortunately that year wasn't like either of those two years, and by comparison 2004 felt like a repeat of 1988.

Really? That gives me more confidence about my birth year. How old were you in 1988 and 2004?
