Subject: Which year had the biggest shift from the early to late 2000's culture?
Written By: batfan2005 on 04/23/21 at 7:42 am
2004 - Emo started to become popular and rock bands like The Killers. It was the premier of Lost. At the end of the year Gwen Stefani released her L.A.M.B. album that was mostly synth pop even though it was hip-hop influenced, but that's debatable if it's associated with 2004 or 2005. The Nintendo DS was released in the US/NA.
2005 - George W. Bush was sworn in for a 2nd term and started declining in popularity especially after Hurricane Katrina. Many TV shows that were popular in the late 2000's premiered like The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Grey's Anatomy, and American Dad. Ringtone rap started to get popular at the end of the year, as well as autotune and artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna made their debuts. The XBox 360 and PSP are released in the US/NA.
2006 - Of course the infamous 2006 shift gets discussed on here a lot mainly because of Justin Timberlake's album. Also with more HD technology. The PS3 and Wii are released. Shows like Heroes, 30 Rock, and Ugly Betty premiered.
2007 - The first iPhone, and rap artists like Soulja Boy become popular as does the "Superman" dance craze.
By 2008 we were well established in the late 2000's culture and that is the first year that is a contender with 2009, 2010, etc. in shifting from the late 2000's culture to the early 2010's with the election of Barack Obama.

Can you clarify the question? What do you mean early to late? What about the mid 2000s? ???

This is just my opinion but I didn't think there was a distinct mid 2000's period, not like the 2010's. I felt the 2000's could be split into two halves.

Actually the 2010s didn't have a middle part. The 2000s certainly did. The mid 2000s were extremely different from the early 2000s and extremely different from the late 2000s. The 2000s was extremely changeful. You can however split the 2010s into two.
Sorry I would vote but I just can't ignore the mid 2000s since it was such a prodominent era. We didn't go from VCRs to smartphones overnight. There was a huge period in the middle with its own distinct culture with flip phones and other cultural trends.

Really ? What makes you say that the 2010s have distinct eras while the 2000s can just be split into 2 ? Just curious

Again, just my opinion but the way I see the 2000's is the eras of the 2 terms of GWB, while 2000 still had Clinton and was a continuation of the late 90's/Y2K era and the later years had Obama which was more early 10's than 00's. So the 2 eras of the 00's were 2001-2004 which was the Post-9/11 and McBling era while 2005-2008 was much more transitional with rap fading and giving way to electronic/dance pop including the Timbaland years of 2006 and 2007.
The 2010's 3 distinct eras are the early 2010-2012 (continuation of late 00's with Lady Gaga EDM), 2013-2016 (Generic pop, PC SJW culture and the rise of the alt-right which led to Trump, rise of BLM), and 2017-2019 (pre-COVID Trump era).

I voted 2007
Whilst 7th gen consoles did launch in 2005-2006, 6th gen consoles, PARTICULARLY the PS2 were still most popular in 2005-2006. By 2007 though, 7th gen gaming TRULY took off, with the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 becoming huge, and as a result, games like Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Windows Vista was released, finally marking a shift away from Windows XP-based computing. Early traces of electropop can be seen. Rhianna blows up with Good Girl Gone Bad. The iPhone marks a shift in mobile technology away from flip phones and feature phones, and toward smartphones, even if not all of them have touch screens yet.

The iPhone changed everything. Probably for the worse considering we're all staring at screens now lol

Do years really have "cultures"?
I could make a list of 10 reasons why 2005 is more connected to 2004 than to 2006. Then I could make a list of 10 reasons why 2005 is more deviated from 2004 than 2006.
If I really attempted, I could make 2005 look like it has more similarities to 1995 than to 2010. This is because "cultures" overlap and there is no one culture that is present or absent entirely at one particular period.

2008. The Stock market crash later in the year pretty much killed the mid-00's! We were now in the dark, scary, late 00's! :D :D :(

2008 kicked off the early 2010s. The mid 2000s ended in '06.
