Subject: Is 2005 culturally closer to 2000 or 2010?
Written By: Rainbowz on 07/05/20 at 12:48 pm
When it comes to technology, politics, music, fashion, TV shows, do you think 2005 had more in common with 2000 or 2010?

2005 leans slightly closer 2000.
Rock was still a major genre in 2005 while it wasn't very popular anymore in 2010. R&B was also popular in both years while it was morphed with electropop in 2010. A lot of the fashion is closer to 2000 than 2010. Politics is a tough one because 2000 had Clinton and 2010 had Obama.

I feel like 2000 was a completely different world from 2005. I mean, 2000 was still pre-9/11, still pre-social media, broadband Internet wasn’t really a thing.
2005 was when YouTube was released and when Myspace took off. You had artists like Rihanna and Black Eyed Peas that were well known in both 2005 and 2010.
I feel as though 2005 has slightly more in common with 2010 tbh.

There was social media in 2000 with chatrooms (a form of social media) like Yahoo messenger, AOL, MSN, blogs, Bulletins, etc. in 2005 Myspace along with the chatrooms noted above were practically the only popular social media sites to visit in ‘05. Youtube came out and Reddit came out however Youtube was not very popular when it first came out. It was a video dating site for college students that failed miserably. Facebook was only available for college students at a specific university. 2000 feels a bit more closer to 2005 imo mainly bc of pop culture. 2000 didn’t feel like much of a long time ago in 2005 however 2005 felt like a distant time in 2010 for some reason. The huge tech shift we seen in 2005-2007 and it’s progressive adaptability really made the early to mid 2000’s seem distant. 9/11 did not drastically change the entire US populations personal lives yet alone the world’s everyday to day lives. It did bring in war, stricter airport security, more xenophobia, homeland security, and a huge devastating emotional impact on many who were personally affected tho. Pop culture felt more closer to 2000. Rihanna could have released some of her singles in 2000 and I wouldn’t have blinked an eye. In 2005 we had Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Gorillaz, G-unit, Pussy Cat dolls, 112, etc.

Definitely leans mire towards 2000. There were no smartphones with social media apps in 2005 like there were in 2010. Music still consisted of pop rock, r&b and emo in 2005 just like 2000. Fashion in 2005 was not if at all any different than fashion in 1999-2000. Baggy jeans, flair jeans, platform flip flops, jersey’s, sweatbands, jnco jeans, bleach blonde spikey hair, puka shells, white t’s, sports wear, emo, etc. in 2010 it was all about skinny jeans, neon colored clothing, there was emo fashion but it wasn’t as big as it was in 2005-2006, snap backs, g-shock watches, vans, etc.

Alternative fashion didn't seem to be as iconic for the first half of the 2000s I think though.

I think there were a few alt fashion scenes tbh. You had the whole cyberpunk fashion going on with the rave kids in the late 90’s early 2000’s (now known as the “y2k fashion”), before emo there was Goth and punk which were really big in the early 2000’s (lots of bleached/colored liberty spikes and mohawks with platform boots, chains and rings.). But I agree, it wasn’t as big as it was in the last half of the 2000’s up until now. There seems to be more of a revival trend going around in fashion these days.

Definitely 2000. It wasn't ruled by social media like 2010 was, and trends in music and television were overall closer to 2000.

2000. Even though it was nothing like 2000, if I had to choose if it leaned towards 2000 or 2010 more then 2000 for sure. 2010 was a completely different world, the shift of 2008 changed everything.

2000 for me as well.

This was a tough one because it wasn't really like either. I went with 2010 because there were plenty of trends from 2005 that were still around in 2010, while trends from 2000 were pretty much out by 2005.

Blonde tips, puka shells, jnco jeans, DC shoes, jean skirts, spiky blonde hair, baggy jeans, flair jeans, etc were pretty interchangeably worn in 2000 and 2005. Those things were not fashionably trendy in 2010 imo.

Guess I’ll say 2000. I remember posts on this board back in 2005 saying that 2005 still looked 90s-ish ::)

It depends.
While YouTube was indeed launched in 2005, me and some of my friends and relatives were still using VCRs, CD players, bulky cell phones, and dial-up that year.
As far as music, gangsta rap began to fade out in the mid 2000s, where we saw the likes of 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, and Snoop Dogg churning out radio- and club-friendly songs heavy on pop and electronica. Guys like Akon, T-Pain, Kanye West, and Chris Brown were all the rage.
Alternative rock was also huge in 2005 (e.g., My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, Green Day, The Killers) but virtually non-existent in 2010.
