Subject: Music of 2002: Closer to 1999 or 2005?
Written By: mc98 on 03/17/20 at 11:53 am
I don’t know about this one.
There was barely any teen pop in 2002. Britney Spears have moved on to a more mature sound in 2001. It’s dominated by hip hop, R&B, Post grunge, and pop punk. At the same time, crunk wasn’t popular in 2002 either. This year was dominated by producers like The Neptunes and Irv Gotti. I would put 2002 closer to 1999 but just a little.

1999 for sure. In 2002 there was definitely teen pop however many teenpop artists completed their last albums in 2002 as well. Girl groups like Play (sweden), Nsync’s last album, Destiny’s Child, S club 7, Aaron carter, lil Bow wow, Romeo etc. released music in 2002 that sound more adjacent to their work in 2000. Britney’s third studio album released in November of 2001, there were some Y2k sounding hits on there like “Overprotected” and “Not a girl not yet a woman” which sounds more similar to her 1999 work tbh. However that album didn’t do as well due to her radio ban from 2001-2003. I will admit 2002 was the year teen pop craze settled down as it wasn’t as big as 1999-2001. R&B in 2002 sounds more 1999ish than 2005. Ashanti’s Happy, Foolish and Baby would not sound out of place in 1999. R&B Music videos were still pretty y2kish.

1999. In 2002, you had post-grunge with acts like Nickelback, pop punk, and hip-hop and contemporary R&B within the likes of Ja Rule, J-Lo, Ashanti, and the Neptunes.

1999. '99 - '02 is the cultural early 2000s even though 1999 had a little different sound because it was part of the Y2K era and once 9/11 happened the bubblegum pop starts turned into more rebellious punk. Having said that, it was still a lot more different than 2005 which was part of the mid 2000s.
