Can you believe it? 2000 was 20 years ago already!!
January 1st 2000 - the world was ringing in the new year and finding out that the Y2k bug was a minor issue. (I.O.W., the most anti-climactic event in computer history as all computers managed to fully function, just as they should have been doing.)

Yes 20 years ago tonight I was at what was supposed to be an all night new years eve party. About 5 hours from home. About 3am things turned sour and I had to leave. So as I was driving home half asleep I was praying there would be no issues with my bank account or gas pumps or whatever. No issues. Arrived home about 8am new years day and zonked out most of the day.
Physical devices ceasing to function seemed outlandish. But I expected more software glitches than there were. Even my Tandy 386SX/33 I was using at the time worked perfectly, and even years later when I plugged it in for kicks.
I knew people who bought generators and stockpiled food and gas fearing Y2K. Which isn't a bad idea in general considering all the winter storms we get.
20 years ago I was alone and it was my first winter in my first house. Now this is my first winter alone in my next house. In some ways not much has changed.

February 18th 2000, An American court ordered the release of FBI files relating to John Lennon's interests and activities including his support for the Irish Republican cause and the Workers Revolutionary Party. The British Government told the US that it wanted the files to remain secret. MI5 also had files on Lennon, which they had passed on the FBI during the 70's.

This day was a Friday, and I remember the American TV series Who Wants To Be A Millionaire having a special airing that night, at 8:30pm. During that month they didn't normally air on Fridays; it was usually Sundays, Tuesdays, and (I think) Thursdays.

In music overall, several music albums are released, including Two Against Nature from Steely Dan and MTV Unplugged from Shakira.
Also, A rare century leap year date (that is, in a year ending in double-zero) occurs. Usually, century years are common years due to not being exactly divisible by 400. 2000 is the first such year to have a February 29 since the year 1600, making it only the second such occasion since the Gregorian Calendar was introduced in the late 16th century. The next such leap year will occur in 2400.

One day late... on April 17th 2000, the Dodgers were scheduled to play a game at Dodger Stadium against the Houston Astros, but the game was postponed due to rain (and eventually made up on June 8th). This is the most recent occurrence of a rained-out game at Dodger Stadium.

May 16, 2000 - Britney Spears released her second album, Oops I Did It Again, on Jive Records. It spawned the singles "Oops I Did It Again," "Lucky," "Stronger," and "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know." It is also the first album to feature a song Spears wrote, "Dear Diary," co-written by Jason Blume (not to be confused with horror film producer Jason Blum) and Eugene Wilde.
The sixth track, "What U See (Is What U Get)," (not to be confused with The Dramatics' 1971 hit) was the subject of a copyright infringement lawsuit.

November 4th 2001: Game Seven of the World Series was played at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The home team, Arizona Diamondbacks, entered the 9th inning down 2-1, but staged a rally to avert a fourth straight title for the visiting New York Yankees. They won the game 3-2 to give themselves a World Series title in only the team's fourth year of existence. The World Series MVP award was split between two pitchers: Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.
This is the most recent World Series to end walkoff style. (Certain games have ended with walkoffs since then, but they weren't the final games of the respective WSes.)

This was the game in which 3-year-old bat boy Darren Baker (whose dad, Dusty Baker, was managing the Giants) narrowly missed being run over at home plate by baserunner David Bell before being grabbed and lifted by his jacket out of the way by J.T. Snow, narrowly preventing a serious collision at home plate. :o

Bush hailed from the same state). This was during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, the comment sparked intense controversy and outrage among Americans, including a large share of country music fans.

June 13th 2003 - G-Man from So Solid Crew was jailed for four years for possessing a loaded handgun. The 24 year-old dumped a loaded gun during a police chase in London last November. He'd always denied it, as well as denying knowing anything about 11 other bullets that were found in a flat in south London. The jury in London's Southwark Crown Court heard evidence that DNA found on the weapon matched his, and found him guilty.

October 28th 2004 - Courtney Love was ordered to stand trial on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon after Kristin King told a Los Angeles court Ms Love threw a bottle and a lit candle at her after turning up at the home of a former boyfriend in the early hours. Ms King told the court Ms Love was "vicious" and "erratic" when she allegedly attacked her while she slept on a sofa on 25 April. She said Ms Love then sat on her, pulled her hair and pinched her left breast in the "worst pinch I ever had", before managing to flee.

One day late but the Nintendo DS was released in the US/NA on November 21, 2004.

I remember that, it was called "Malice at the Palace" since it was at the Palace of Auburn Hills, where the Detroit Pistons used to play. It was the Pacers vs Pistons.

November 30, 2004: The Jeopardy episode in which Ken Jennings’ record-setting championship came to an end aired.
It was his 75th game, which he lost to challenger Nancy Zerg. Heading into the Final Jeopardy round, only Ken and Nancy could play, because the third contestant did not have a positive score at the end of Double Jeopardy. Ken’s score was $14,400; Nancy had $10,000. In Final Jeopardy, Nancy wrote a correct answer to the Final Jeopardy question and risked $4,401, giving her a temporary $1 lead. Ken wrote a wrong answer, so he finally lost, and congratulated his opponent for winning.
After his response was revealed to be incorrect, the audience audibly gasped, and Nancy appeared to be shocked after realizing that she won. Ken was awarded $2,000 for his second-place finish, which gave him a final total of $2,522,700 for his Jeopardy! run.

10 January 2005 - La Conchita, an unincorporated area northwest of Ventura, CA, (via US Highway 101) suffered a major landslide. The volume of the landslide was estimated to be approximately 200,000 cubic meters with a surface 350 meters (1,150 feet) long and 80–100 meters (260–330 ft) wide. The landslide destroyed 13 houses and severely damaged 23 others. There were 10 confirmed fatalities.

Johnny died from prostate cancer in September 2004 at the age of 55. Hundreds turned out for the ceremony, including Tommy Ramone the only surviving band member. Dee Dee Ramone died of a drugs overdose in 2002 and Joey died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer.

The 2005 Glendale train crash occurred on January 26th of that year. A Metrolink commuter train collided with a suv that had been parked on the tracks by a suicidal man in an industrial area of Glendale, California, just east of the Los Angeles city limits, causing the deaths of 11 people and injuring 177 more. The driver of the car, who had changed his mind shortly before the impact but willingly left his car on the tracks, survived the incident and was charged with eleven counts of murder and one count of arson.
