Subject: Less obvious differences between the 2000s and 2010s?
Written By: goodbants on 12/09/19 at 9:23 am
I know the main differences, i.e. social media, political division, etc. But what else is really different? I think the 2010s are a lot crazier in general. I think things move faster and there’s just so much that nothing surprises us anymore, if that makes sense. I need the armchair sociologists of this site to help me!!

Technology has changed. Also the way we have access to internet has changed. Before, accessing the internet on a cellular device was pretty much impossible or VERY expensive and extremely slow. Little differences I notice is mostly how everything can be done on our phone. Back in the 20000’s you needed a computer for internet, a camcorder to record videos, a camera to take picture, a potable CD player, mp3 or ipod to listen to music, etc. Now everything is done on a device.

Dont know if you'd consider it less obvious, but there is a difference in the way we perceive celebrity culture.
Back in the 2000s, celebrities still had that "bigger than life" feel. They were seen as unordinary, grandiose figures. The big award shows like the VMAs, Billboard Awards, Oscars, red carpet events, etc and shows like MTV cribs, MTV Diary, and the plethora of shows VH1 had detailing the extravagant celebrity lifestyle aided in their grandiose image.
Today, celebs feel more relatable thanks to their use of social media. We get to see their thoughts more frequently and regular people have the chance to interact with them daily. Social media and the absence of those big celebrity shows really took away the "mysterious" aspect famous people used to have. Also the fact that everyday people can become famous through the internet and end up at the VMAs removed some of the prestige associated with celebrity status.
Speaking of award shows, the 2000s was saturated with music related TV shows. 106 & Park, TRL, Top 10 Countdown on VH1, Making the Video/Access Granted, Making Da Band, MTV Diary, Spring Bling music specials on both BET & MTV, Fuse TV, Suckafree Sunday, Rap City, etc, etc, etc, music videos all day long.
In the 2010s, we dont have those types of shows on television anymore and the big award shows like the VMAs do not receive the same amount of effort they once did.

And like you said, things are definitely a lot more fast pace. I'm sure this decade emphasizes convience and instant gratification more than any other decade. Social media, things like doordash, postmates, etc, Amazon Prime, Walmart shopping and delivering groceries to your car all demonstrate how much significance we put into things being easy and convenient.

On technology, keeping the stuff you pay for is less of a norm no thanks to DRM.

I was just thinking about this the other day. It’s interesting that now it’s easier to obtain fame than ever before, it’s less glamorized. I do prefer this celebrity culture to that of the 2000s. I think in general the celebs of today are more down to earth, or at least the ones I’m interested in. There’s always going to be good role models and bad role models, but I do think there are a lot more celebrities that are good role models today than in the past.
I’m young, so I spent my childhood witnessing the celebrity culture of the 2000s and my teen years following the celebrity culture of the 2010s. The celebrity culture in the 2000s felt like a circus show. In the 2010s, I grew up with famous youtubers that I feel like we’re a really good influence on me and many other teens. They made videos that helped me navigate through life during my teenage years, and I’m really thankful for the community they provided. Of course there are bad influence youtubers like Jake and Logan Paul who get the most attention, but OG youtubers I used to watch like Jenna Marbles, Dan and Phil, Markiplier, and Smosh are all good eggs imo. Even many of the Hollywood celebrities of today are really inspiring.
I’m a big Ariana Grande fan and the Manchester bombing was horrible, but her One Love concert was so amazing and touching, and her album Sweetener is about getting through the hardships in life and finding the sweetness. She has been through a lot.

And ordering food has made it much easier in 2019 going into 2020, You can easily order something from a menu online and then place your order and pick it up at the counter.

I’m I the only one who still orders food by calling? It’s just easier for me for some reason.

Don't you think it's better to look online rather than to talk to someone over the phone?

I don’t know, then I have to fill out all my information and stuff and sometimes the formatting is weird on my phone. Talking is just easier for some reason.

Yes the thing people wrote about celebrities is true but I don't like that it's so easy to be famous these days... We never needed more famous people, what's wrong with being normal? ???

That’s true. It definitely increases douchebaggery in people who think they can be famous.
