Subject: 2000 to be 20 Years Old...
Written By: Slim95 on 11/15/19 at 12:00 am
Can you believe it? How do you feel about 2000, a year that has always been seen as "futuristic" in the 20th century, and a year that has felt very "new" is gonna become retro and 20 years old? The passage of time freaks me out sometimes! 2000 is gonna be like what 1980 was in the year 2000, I just can't believe it.

Kids today see me in the same way I saw people born in 1975 back in 2000. That’s pretty weird. As a kid I couldn’t differentiate between 25 and 45, they were all just grownups to me. Now I’m one the grownups. Don’t always feel like it though, lol.

I remember 20 years ago I was in my 20's and now I'm a young adult, just feels like yesterday that I was thinking of being in my mid 40's.

In 2000 I was 5 years old so it does feel like a long time ago to me but still, I can't believe it's already 20 years old. Time flies!

2000 is (probably) the first year I remember. It's definitely strange to think that it was as close to 1980 as today. I can remember the cars being quite different.

Weird to think that 1990 is going to be 30 years ago. When I think of 25 or 30 years ago I still think 1973 or 1978 or something like that. ;D

I was in high school in 2000, that right there alone makes me realize how much time has flown by.
There was a lot of expectations that the 2000s would be all futuristic and awesome, the obsession with shiny platinum and translucent colors back then, that whole Y2K aesthetic. The actual 2000s (and 2010s) have been a massive letdown, no huge advancement in robotics, the internet being used in such banal, petty ways.

Yeah it had that futuristic feel and aesthetic it was cool I hope that comes back. But in reality the decades didn't go as people expected but the internet grew expansively.

2000 is the first year I can actually draw vivid memories from my early childhood. It feels weird to tell people “oh yeah I went there 20 years ago” or that I can even remember that far back. I was 3 years old in 2000. My favorite song was Who let the dogs out :(

I miss the internet of 2000. To me it had everything you needed and no BS, and worked on a simple connection. There were chat rooms, dating sites, online shopping, news, all sorts of things. You could find exactly what you were looking for. Today there's so much out there it seems difficult to find anything useful. And I still don't have high speed internet available where I live, but they say it's coming next year. I'll believe it when I see it.
I still like my cars from the 80s. To me, in the 90s they turned into jellybeans and after that they got too complicated and expensive to work on.
It's been 20 years since I bought my first house. I have a daughter who is almost 19 and is successfully on her own. Married and divorced twice and now I'm right back to where I was 20 years ago, alone in my own house. It feels like it's been a long time, because it has. A lot has happened and more than not it's been a very rough ride. I still have a lot of what I started with back then, which is nice. Aside from my daughter of course, would be nice to delete the last 20 years from my history and give it a 2nd try with what I have.

I didn't that's because I had adult siblings by that point so a 25 year old still felt like a teenager to me

Let's face it, 2000 is old.
19 year olds today were born in 2000, nobody under 22 remembers the year. Most things were still done traditionally, people read newspapers, nearly everyone had a landline, many people weren't on the Internet, and the world was much less developed and globalized compared to now.

Maybe, but nobody under 25 would really remember it well enough to have a good idea of what it felt like to be alive then.

Okay maybe more like 23-24. I can remember being 5 well in some ways but I don't remember much about what people wore, or the politics, and stuff like that. But you're right, I do remember SOME things that were indicative of the time, like when I was 5 it was the mid-90s and you could smoke almost ANYWHERE in most places.

I was 5 in 2000 as well. I remember what people wore, I also remember what I wore myself, but I don’t remember anything political. I also remember getting our first computer at home.
Here in the UK, most people still didn’t have the internet, a computer or a mobile phone in 2000. VHS was still dominant and even cassette tapes were still pretty popular. You could still smoke in restaurants and pubs.

I remember little bits and pieces of when I was 2. I think having pictures or videos help. Because if you see the picture or video again it recalls the memory of that moment.

I remember certain things from 2000 pretty clearly and I was born in 1997 I remember I started preschool in August of 2000. I remember the music and the cell phones. My mom wore A LOT of lip liner. I remember halloween 2000 and Oops I did it again. I still have my JC Nsync doll from 2000 as well. I can post some photos if ppl wanna see the culture of that year. Some memories seem distant others seem clear. I was 3-3 1/2 that year. Good times for my childhood.

no huge advancement in robotics
What the heck are you talking about? The industry of robotics and AIs have taken such leaps and bounds it's actually really scary how fast it's going. Assisting a robotic arm being able to operate (and I'm talking about chirurgical procedures) to such a precise degree was a mind-blowing experience :o

2000 is probably my favorite year ever. I was a junior high school kid back then, and I look at it as sort of the last year of my childhood, and because of that, I have a lot of nostalgia.
So much awesome stuff. Pokemon was at it's peak with Pokemon the Movie 2000 and the launch of Gold and Silver. Toonami and Dragon Ball Z peaked. Kids WB was must see TV with Pokemon, Superman and Cardcaptors. The WWF was at it's peak with The Rock being a mega star and Stone Cold Steve Austin returning. The MTV era dominated by ridiculously cheesy stuff like Teen Pop and Pop Punk was at it's peak. The PlayStation 2 launched. The last big year for the 5th Gen of consoles with great games like Final Fantasy IX, Spyro 3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and more.
Not so long ago I would've said that 2000 could have never seemed like 20 years ago, but it actually kind of does. When I see kids these days with iPhones, social media at age 5, and this other advanced tech, that era of me using our dial-up computer and playing a Game Boy seems old.

The funny thing is the few memories I have from the year 2000 in terms of pop culture are Pokemon. I remember it was quite big that year. My brother and his friends were always trading Pokemon cards and I got excited when he gave me a card. It was always being talked about. I also remember Britney Spears being huge that year and there being a countdown program on TV for her new video for "Oops" where they were interviewing her and counting down until the video premiere lol. I think that was on Much Music here in Canada.
Even though 2000 seems like a long time ago now, I still can't believe it's 20 years old. But I guess that's just how it is now. Kinda freaky yet at the same time understandable.
