Subject: Things We Did In the 00s That We Don’t Do Anymore
Written By: Retrolover on 08/03/19 at 11:20 am
What are somethings that adults, teens, and children did in the noughties that aren’t done today?
I’ll go first:
- Jot down phone numbers in address books like people did in the latter half of the 20th century (Pre-2007)
- Use pay phones (Again, Pre-2007)
- Drink from water fountains in the park
What are some more?

A lot of us didn't drink from water fountains in the park even in the heyday. They were too gross and unsanitary. Not only people's "germs" if you will, but birds used them, people spit gum (and spit) in them, etc. And the water frequently tasted like rusty pipes.

That's right; sometimes the tap water would have chemicals dissolved into it, essentially making it unfit.

Burn music CDs on computers...I miss doing that. Back then I would spend hours burning CDs putting together compilations and writing the titles on the CD with markers! Fun.

Pay phones are still around but only a limited amount of them I see, they were replaced by LinkNYC which acts like a payphone but on these big devices you can look at various news articles, read the weather, catch up on train and bus schedules and charge your phone.

Not all of them looked like that, but still I’ve ran across quite a few with gum and fruit on the part of the fountain where you could see it. 8-P

Now people are willing to get their music lost by companies who host them on streaming services :\'(
As an aside, this thread is about to make me feel quite sad.

I don’t think kids even watch TV anymore. The only cartoons they would be having a crush on at the moment would be some of the characters in “Fortnite”.

Seriously though. That makes me cringe a ton.
Wonder if 2007 babies have done that when they were 5-8.

Not only “AOL”, but the lesser known internet connection servitors. They were free in supermarkets and came delivered to everyone’s door like those Valpack coupons and the Dollar Saver.

We won't be able to keep new music because it's all being streamed and companies can choose whether or not they stay up, and the keyboard phones were great as long as you enabled T9. You could even use it one handed better than QWERTY keyboards of today.

You could make a doorway curtain out of those CDs in 2002 or 2003. That’s just how many we had!!! :o
They’re not worth anything to anyone other than XYers and Yers, but you rarely see them in thrift store.

Yeah the only time I saw a payphone now was at the airport. It's weird because I remember several years ago there were still some around at bus stops and stores and malls, but now they are all gone. It's so rare to find one and when you do it's like unlocking treasure lol.

MySpace
Flip phones, Blackberrys
Digital cameras (having to wait until you had access to a desktop or laptop to upload photos, to MySpace)
iPods (having to download music on iTunes on your desktop or laptop, and then plug in your iPod to the USB port to sync)
AIM and Yahoo Messenger (Yahoo will also follow AOL to become obsolete in the 20s)

I still use an iPod classic. It's so easy to upload and listen to entire albums (CDs) for one who is a listener of whole albums like me, and so easy to access any song I choose at any time. It is also very easy to manipulate with one hand while in my pocket while I'm on public transportation or some such. No fiddling around, no touch pad, no swiping, none of the inconvenience of phones and streaming services. Everything is under my own control.

...chat rooms as in family would converse in the lounge or around the dining table?

Forums were popular in the 2000s and now people aren't on them as much anymore except for us lol

Oh yes, especially on here;; many users would come to this site on a daily basis and make lots of posts; that seems to have tapered off since the early part of the 10s.

I actually still have one and it still works like a charm!
I used to use those disposable cameras.

I miss those chat rooms where when you'd type something it would scroll faster.

Got free stuff from stores and restaurants.
FYE still gives out free catalogs and pamphlets with items on sale, but no other stores in the mall do that anymore.

Oh gosh-YES! I joined so many of them back in 2001-2003. There was one I remember called "Friendship".

Ahh do you remember how elementary schools, middle schools and high schools were required to have a payphone either inside the school or on the corner ? First day of kindergarten I had to learn how to make a collect call in case of an emergency on the payphone. I don’t see that very often.
Renting movies (physically) isn’t very common anymore.
Yellow pages (pre 2007)
Printing maps out on map quest. Remember if our parents got lost on the road going to an amusement we had to manually crank down the window and ask random drivers
for directions?
Toy r us
Cd players, ipods, mp3 players, burning CD’s
Dvd’s and CD’s are fading out. VHS has been been for nearly 15 years

With this recent hot weather, local Authorities are encouraging more public water fountains, but I do not trust them...

I do not exactly trust the public water fountains either; they could be contaminated in more ways than one.

Now it's either Netflix or Hulu.

I'm guessing they contain a lot of bacteria.
