Subject: What was the Graphic Design/Aesthetic trend of the 2000s?
Written By: Early2010sGuy on 04/13/19 at 6:05 pm
Aesthetics of each decade
60s: Hippie
70s: Disco (Mainly orange and yellow colors)
80s: Flashy Neon grids and futurism
90s: Tesselation or Memphis graphic design patterns
2010s: Flat and minimalism
What was the 2000s then? And sorry if I seem like I'm making a decadeology thread here, just wanna know what was the 2000s aesthetic.

2000s was Flashy and Skeuomorphism. The former was very popular in much of the fashion trends of the decade ('bling-bling', studded belts, glitter, embellished rhinestones on t-shirts, pimped out rims on cars, etc.) and the latter was popular for a lot of popular logos, websites, and UIs in the decade (logos like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Pepsi, etc. UIs like the first iOS., macOS, or XP, etc. websites like Wikipedia, myspace, YouTube, etc.).

depends on what part of the 2000s, early, mid and the electropop era were not the same at all despite what some old people here say

I would say glossy, beleveled and metallic. Skeuomorphism was indeed a pretty widespread UI pretty much throughout the entirety of the decade, unlike the flat design of the 2010s.
Also hippie, disco or futurism (?) aren't graphic designs but ok.

I think the early 2000's were quite colorful but in a slightly generic/muted way. mid 2000's and late 2000's then were quite glossy and flashy looking in comparison

All of the 2000s had the same design until around 2008. In 2008, flat design came and many companies changed their logos like Pepsi for example. This design didn't go away since then, it only made its way to the internet and became very minimal and even less colourful now.

You mean the digital flat design? A lot of logos in the social media, digital and app era have that type of design. I started noticing that more frequently throughout the late 00's too.

I know about skeuomorphism about the electropop era, but I'm wondering, what was the post-9/11 to Mid 2008 aesthetic like?
It would be a pleasure to show a photo

Sorry guys, but Skeumorphism reigned well into the early 2010s. Flat design became the standard exactly around 2012 and 2013. The ones who pushed the trend into the spotlight were Apple with IOS7 and Microsoft with Windows 8, but even then people were critical of it, and it didn't become the norm until 2015. I'd say Skeuomorphism as a trend started in the late 90s, once 3d objects, gradients and other complex looking computer graphics were being implemented in UI design, but what really kicked it off was Windows XP and OSX Cheetah, both released in 2001. This only became more apparent as the decade went on with later releases of Windows until Windows 8 and versions of OSX until OSX Yosemite.

One more thing, the early 2000s had this chrome or silver aesthetic trend, where phones, computers, cameras, TVs and other electronic devices were some shade of matte silver or chrome. https://assets.entrepreneur.com/slideshow/20170619162152-Sharp-J-SH04-CP-2011.jpeg?width=1000

Chrome was not for me, it easily scratched and the marking could be clearly seen.

No it started in the late 2000s, around 2008. I'm not talking about software UI but general logos and commercials were switching to flat and colourful in 2008 - 2009. We did not have the same skeumorphism in the early 2010s as was popular in the 2000s.

Yes logos did start changing around that time but the glossy orb was still popular well into 2013, just take a look at the LG logo. Logos may have started getting simple around that time, but it only became mainstream around the early to mid-2010s. Also when we speak of UI, it was still skeuomorphism until 2013. take a look at smartphones from that time period and look at Android Kit-kat, and IOS6.

For Windows it was 2012, when Windows 8 came out. Some websites before that even.

For Skeuomorphism, this design trend lasted from 2001 to 2014 or 15. It started out with Windows XP, when Windows had a huge revamp in design. It was carried out to some flip phone homescreens and websites like Newgrounds, MSN, forums, and business/education sites. I'd say skeuomorphism was at its peak in 2009/10, when Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, and Safari used this type of design. It also became popularized thanks to the rise of Smartphones with the iPhone 4, as well as the iPad, Windows 7, XBOX 360 and PS3 dashboards, and a lot more. It was also popular with boxes and movie posters too, and Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites take inspiration from it. But at the same time, flat design was already growing since late 2008 with the New Pepsi logo, and Windows 8's development. But it really declined rapidly from 2013 to 2014 because of Windows 8.1, iOS 7, and the Xbox One/PS4 dashboards, but at the same time, in websites, skeuomorphism was mixed with the flat design, as shown in Android 4.4, and it was also shown in Galaxy S4/S5 devices. Another way it was mixed was people's tastes, it took some time getting used to, until mid 2014 when everyone was pretty much ok now with the flat design. I'd say the skeuomorphism design's popularity died out in 2015 when Windows 10 got released, and people took the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and the Galaxy S6 had very little skeuomorphism elements left. But when the Skeuomorphism design will really end is in 2020, when Windows 7's support ends. Skeuomorphism is still used in Steam, but that's it.

I know what 2000 is all about with the Y2K futurism already, but I'm talking about the core 2000s.

If you look at cellphones from the era they still had many Y2K elements, so a general futuristic look, just google "2005 cell phones". Also here is a video about how they thought some of the 8th generation consoles would look like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzLIUgnKY40.
On a side note? What do you think the 2020s aesthetic will be? I have a prediction because I have seen something emerging in the last year or two, that I'd like to discuss, but can't say for certain if it will last the entire decade.

I googled "Cellphones 200X", all the way from 2000 to 2009 and for the majority of the decade, they all had a silver color with at least one part that looked metallic or chrome. The main thing is that they all tried to look metallic. If you look at the ones in the 90s they all looked plastic. Blackberries and large keyboard phones became more popular near the end, even the touchscreen phones had a keyboard or a lot of buttons, the size of the screen also grew. Take a look at this:

And now they are glass.
Yeah generally they are all glass mainly due to the screen being so large, and this trend will only continue until there is nothing but a screen, and then eventually there will be no screen and just a holographic projector. Ignoring the screen, the phones that we have now are much more high quality from the way they look. They make the 2000s flip phones quiet literally look like toys. Like comparing an expensive modern day supercar to a junky sedan from the 1970s.

I hope the 2020s aesthetic would be 1920s inspired because I want another Roaring 20s era, mixed with some 80s and Y2K futurism, kinda like distinct neon objects with a black and white background

I hope the '20s has its own unique aesthetic. I've always hoped electro swing would be the main music genre of the 2020s, it seems fitting.

Electro Swing was already a huge thing in the early 2010s. And imo it's not really a good genre either, it's just a Jazz sample lazily cut out to fit a generic House beat 8-P.
And tbh if the 2020s end up being a modern rehash of the 1920s then I will be pretty disappointed. They need to be their own thing!

2000s was another decade of excess like the 80s were. 2000/2001 is when skeumorphism became big with Mac OS X and Windows XP.
2009 is when flat design first became a thing. I remember this is when Pepsi and Nickelodeon changed their logos to flatter logos. But skeumorphism still remained the dominant design trend until 2011, when Windows 8 really started development, Google Chrome changed their logo, etc. By 2014, all traces of skeuomorphic design were gone.
And yeah, 2000s was the bling-bling decade. Rhinestones were huge in the 2000s.

This whole time, that’s what that aesthetic was called, I did notice a decline of it in the early 2010s when IOS 7 rolled around the corner considering I’m an iPhone user.

Skeumorphism peaked more in 2007. That's when Windows Vista, the OG iPhone came out. Also, Pepsi had their most skeumorphic logo during this time. I think the whole "Dark and Digital" aesthetic was a byproduct of skeumorphism being so popular.

For the early 2000s, this is very true, look at Jet Set Radio. 90s also loved grafitti, even the Fresh Prince of Bel Air logo is grafitti.
