Subject: Early 2000s Appreciation Thread
Written By: Slim95 on 02/03/19 at 2:53 am
This thread is dedicated to the most amazing era ever, the early 2000s. Post all your memories, photos, memorabilia, etc from the early 2000s 2000 - 2003 (numerical). This era was truly magical, I would never imagine as a kid growing up in that era that I would one day look back to that time with such awe.
The time when you had one cell phone in each family with basic calls and no text, when Britney Spears was always on the cube TV and the radio, when getting on your white CRT computer with Windows 2000 on it was considered "cool", when having 3-way calls with your friends on the landline like Miranda, Gordo, and Lizzie was every kid's dream, when you finally got MSN messaging on slow internet and were considered the popular kid if you had MSN, kick ass commercials on the TV, when kids were actually playing outside, collecting CDs and cassette tapes, VHS and DVDs.... I can talk about the early 2000s all day long I miss it so much I would do anything to go back and relive this era again.

There's many early 2000s topics man. Haha When I feel old tho, I just think about, I didn't completely miss the early 2000s. The 2000s in general is a era I would never want to miss and glad I didn't.

Yass @ 2003 being part of the early 00s
I don't want to get into decadeology arguments so I am using the numerical years as those are facts and there are no arguments but I think everyone knows where I stand on that but we won't get into that lol.

I've been feeling very nostalgic lately for some reason and have been spending a lot of time watching old videos on YouTube that were popular in my childhood. That's what inspired this thread. :P But we need to keep the nostalgia going on this forum there isn't enough!

I had so much fun in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Block Buster Video sold Pokemon room greeters that would interact when you passed by them. I had Charamander and I still to this day have a Squirtle room greeter.
General Mills cereals came with free CD games like Amazon Trail, Scrabble, Chutes and Ladders, and Carmen Sandiego

The early 2000s was a special time indeed. I started to massively become nostalgic back in like 2014/2015, especially after I graduated from high school and became active in the nostalgic internet community (this site in particular back in mid 2015).
One of my favorite years of my childhood, and the early 2000s in general, was the early 2000s 'finale' of sorts.... 2003:

It's pretty funny how you're now even seeing Late 00s-Early 10s nostalgia on Facebook and Twitter, when not too long ago people ranted on that era as being the Downfall Era. I guess everyone comes around to appreciate every era.

I have not but we're sticking to numerical time here not cultural interpretation. ;) In my opinion the best time of the early '00s anyway were 2000 and 2001, these were the Y2K years with the best futuristic aesthetic and primitive technology, and Pokemon card collecting was still in, it's the time I am most nostalgic for. That's the best era ever in my opinion, nothing beats 2000 - 2001. Yes there was bubblegum pop but as A 5 year old I liked that stuff. ;D

One of my acquaintances I just met in a class was born in late 1993 and we talked about the early 2000's for a good 10 minutes ;D
we mentioned all the 2000 glasses people used to wear regularly throughout 2000 before the NY and afterwards because of how exciting it was to be in the new millennium! I know technically that wasn't until 2001, but the craze of us being in the 2 thousands now instead of the 1 thousands was epic at the time. I was only 4 in 2000 but it was extremely hard to not notice the craze of 2000 glasses even as a 4 year old. I had a pair of my own in my treasure chest.

No one can ever tell me that Spring and Summer 2003 were NOT early 2000's. That period will always be early 2000's to me I don't care what anyone says or thinks. Even when you do your research when it comes to throwbacks and stuff Summer 2003 is still considered as part of the early. Fall 2003 on the other hand...... I can see extreme mid vibes coming in fast.

I'm going to be honest, here in 2019, I don't really care about generalizing the early 2000's anymore, to me, I'm nostalgic for ANY time period before social media started becoming a big part of our lives, and I'm not just talking about the modern YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat era we're in. I'm talking about a time before YouTube even existed and MySpace was the only major social media site around still really young. If it's a totally pre-social media time, then I'm nostalgic for it. So 2004 and 2005 are included in. IMO the real social media era doesn't begin until 2006, and it's EARLY compared to today.

2018 was a busy year for early 2000s nostalgia in music, between "2002", "Nice for What" taking elements from early 00s-R&B (it does feels a lot like "Slow Jamz"!), "Cry Me a River"-inspired "Without Me" and Ariana Grande making her "Thank U, Next" clip as a shout out to 2000-2004 teen movies and breaking YouTube records.
Artists are their hands on the era 8)

Numerically you can divide the decade in half if you want where '00 - '04 is early 2000s and '05 - '09 is late 2000s. A lot of normies do this. I prefer early, mid, and late distinctions in terms of numerical division.
I'm gonna do my best to never mention cultural divisions on this site again and strictly stick to numerical divisions. Too much drama and controversy.

You can't have 2003 without 2004, 2004 without 2005. And so on. Logisticly, it doesn't work. How did we get here? We went through all the 80's, 90's, 00's, and now even the 10's and now we are in the 20's and right back to where we were in the 1920's with the styles and music. 100 years flew by and nobody knew any better.

Straight up facts brother. Im not gonna lie, I'm starting to become nostalgic of the entire (yes you heard right), the entire 2000s decade. The early 2000s will always be the sweet spot since that were my core pre school/early elementary days, but the mid-late 2000s when I was in elementary/middle school are starting to feel like a different world now, in a good way. I sometimes get weirdly nostalgic about 2008 of all years..... right around when I started actin like a fool ;D.

Probably the later 95ers.
It doesn't matter people, and as time goes on it's going to matter less and less. Let's just be glad we spent most of our pre-teenage (not preteens, all years before teen) years in a world without social media being dominated. I appreciate 2004 and 2005 a lot more now than I did before.
I used to be one of those people who’d be all like “Anything 2007 and onwards was crap. I’m glad to have grown up before that for most of my childhood.” Yes, 2003-2006 were more magical childhood years for me, but looking back, the final 3 years of my childhood (2007-2009) weren’t so bad since it was still an era before social media became overly commercialized.

I still prefer the early 10's over the late 00's, my opinion will never change on that, but hey I can't control what era anyone on here likes. Former president Barack Obama's election and inauguration were such a surreal moment, and I had a lot of good memories on my DS and Wii. Those were the biggest highlights of the late 00's for me.

Im one of the few mid 90s born who always appreciated 2006 kid culture. I honestly enjoyed the late 00s better than the early 10s. I still view 07 and 08 as apart of my childhood even though I was in middle school those years. I was old enough to experience pop culture but young enough to still enjoy kid stuff. I was still young and innocent those years, I didn't start feeling disconnected from my childhood till around late 2009.

I’m increasingly nostalgic for the late 2000s, especially for the music. I’ve recently been on a late 2000s music binge. Those years weren’t always good for me since my early teen years were a little.. tumultuous.. but there were plenty of good points.

There's still some kid culture I enjoyed from the late 00's and even early 10's, but it was very minimal tho. The DS, Wii, and Angry Birds immediately come to mind. My first trip to New York in Summer 2011 was so surreal that I felt like a young kid lost in the city, even tho I was 15 because it was my first time ever there. I just went to New York again this past Christmas and it felt COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and I was more familiar with the city. I had a love and hate experience with New York during Christmas.
Anyways, the kid culture of 2006 was my least favorite of my core childhood, but luckily 2006 was the best summer of my childhood (talked about it many times on this forum) so I didn't have to worry about it, and I got a DS that year and started online gaming for the first time. 2007-2009 were fun years for being a preteen or teen tho when it came to the early days of Facebook/YouTube, the late years of MySpace, and the movies that came out around that time. 2007 was an epic year for cinema bruh, I could go on and on. 2009 had Avatar and The Blind Side so you couldn't go wrong with that year either. Also the music at the time was really great and underappreciated, it was a huge improvement from the mid 00's TBH, and a lot of artists who made an impact on 10's music started around throughout the late 00's.

Anyone remember “102 Dalmatians: Puppies To The Rescue”?
Released in 2000, though I played the hell out of it in Kinder and first grade in 2002-2003.

I didn't get to watch that one, but I unironically like the 1996 movie ;D
And that only reminded me of the late '90s TV show. Now that was some good stuff!

I remember you telling me went to nyc at 15, New York is one the those places that changes every time you visit. Coming from someone who use to live in NYC and would visit every year up until recently I can attest to that statement. As far as lthe late 00s kid stuff I liked it was the first few seasons of icarly, Bakugan, Class of 3000, Total Drama Island, DS lite, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Ben 10 Allen Force, Wizards of Waverley Place. Most of the backlash 2006 gets is pretty unfair, yea the "late 2006" happens but in the grand scheme of things 2006 wasn't all that different from 2004 and 2005. It was still a mid 2000s year and everything people loved about the 00s were still relevant in 06 for the most part. Music wise I get that not everyone liked the snap rap but they were still some good and memorable songs that released that year, gaming was transtioning to 6th to 7th gen and CN and Nick, and Disney still had decent shows to watch despite Hannah Montana release.

Speaking of early 2000s games, any of y'all play this game?

It was a Crash Bandicoot clone, but had a charm of its own, with the boomerangs being a rather unique weapon in video games. The sequels tried making it more "Edgy", especially the third game, with mechs and Sonic Adventure 2-esque plots. They were good too, but kinda lost the charm of the first game.

2006 definitely has its audience. For me it was also the first year I experienced heartbreak that made the rest of it feel dramatic. I was also dumb asf that year

My best friend had 2. I have sick memories of watching him play. I was immense in the game's environments and I like how the game wasn't about "owning" the enemies.
The game still has a potentially timeless aesthetic.

Unpopular opinion, but for me, I’d extend it to 2007. But I’m from the Philippines and in the 00s, we were always culturally behind by 6 months to a year, so that might factor in.
I have a soft spot for 2002-2007, most especially 2003-2005, an era when the PPG and the KND intersected. :)
I and my fellow mid-late 90s babies were disappointed that our experience with the classic Nicktoons and Cartoon Network Powerhouse era was cut short (3 years in that era at most), and I guess the disappearance of such cartoons made us biased against the latter half of the decade. But now that I’m well past that phase, come to think of it, no one era is totally abysmal imho. The mid-late 00s (05-07) used to get a lot of flak for crappy CN shows like Squirrel Boy, but now, people are realizing that it was still a solid era; it’s just that people were comparing the best of one era with the worst of another one. Many great things that started in the early 00s (e.g. KND, Chalkzone, Billy & Mandy) continued on to that era & even well past it. It even had its fair share of great series of its own (e.g. Avatar, Danny Phantom).

Yeah, this past Christmas was my first trip to New York in 7 1/2 years, and it definitely didn't feel the same as my first time going there in 2011. Christmas in New York was a great experience, but I do think it's a bit overhyped if you don't know what you're doing. It was COLD AF "blurrrrr" walking in that weather all day and night long 8-P but I still had a lot of fun. This time we stayed with a family member then went to a hotel for a little bit. The Whole Foods in NY was amazing. Macy's was as good as I remembered, and we went to this extremely fancy dress store and there were 2 separate story buildings for the men and women. We decided to do the Uber a lot more than the Subway this time. My favorite moments of this Christmas trip to NY was the WICKED play and Radio City Rockettes. The WICKED play exceeded my expectations by so much I was amazed!
So anyways, when it comes to kid shows of the 00's, I've said this multiple times before, K & 1st grade it was cartoons only, 2nd-4th grade during the center of my elementary years it was a mixture of both cartoons and live-action shows, then in 5th & 6th grade I just stuck with the live-action shows and moved on to more mature shows. There were some exceptions. I still watched American Dragon Jake Long, Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Ed Edd n Eddy, Codename: KND, and Foster's Home, but only casually. I also started watching Boomerang in late 2006 too.
It was normal for our age group to be into iCarly because that's an older target audience, same goes for Total Drama Island. TDI was targeted towards 9-14 year old's, that wasn't really a little kid cartoon with the type of dialogue and humor in the show. When I got my DS in May 2006 that's when I began to shift away from a lot of kids TV in general. When I was 10 and 11 I started getting into random shows on G4, TruTV, Spike, , TBS, FOX, and so forth.
Nickelodeon was probably the best, or least worst of the kids stations throughout the late 00's, because you still had the splat logo before 2009, and you had iCarly and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The nicktoon ideas started dying around this time tho, as every new nicktoon being created was really bad while Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents began to clog up the network. The live-action shows of Nick (without any bias) were still realistically creative through Victorious (which was a show I was NOT into). After Victorious and Sam & Cat (which were the early 10's) it all fell apart.
I'm shocked you were into Bakugan :o because I had completely lost interest in ALL kiddy anime well before that show came out! I've never heard of anyone who I grew up with near my age into that franchise. I fell off of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as I got into Naruto and Bleach.

For people around my age it was about 4 years in that era at most but 3 for me (starting in 2001 and ending in 2004). I don't worry about it cause I remember it very well and it went by really slow. That Powerhouse era of CN was something special to remember. The magnitude of it. The Powerhouse era of CN was like Michael Jordan while the City/YES era of CN was like LeBron James, if you get what I mean ;D That era of animation on a TV will never be replicated again in modern era. The closest to a Powerhouse you've ever get today is creating your own lineup by streaming Netflix cartoons (originals and non-originals), DC cartoons from the DC app, and Disney Channel/XD cartoons.
The Powerhouse era of CN took decades of work when you think about it, not just the current shows at the time. Even many Gen X'ers enjoyed CN because there was a lot of content for them at the time as well. That's been the issue with CN, they've only focused on their main kid audience for awhile now. Yes, you had Adventure Time and Regular Show, but those are only 2 shows with similarities (close to the same genre). There was a time when CN had a library of different styled cartoons and lineups from different blocks for wide variety of age groups to see.
My uncle worked for CN from 1994-2000, and one woman I talked to a couple of weeks ago used to work for Turner years ago and agreed with me that CN isn't what it used to be. I'm from Atlanta which is home of all the Turner stations including CN, and going around CNN center and the CN store was a big deal for me as a kid, it just isn't the same.

We’re around the same age (also from 96, albeit late) and I also enjoyed Powerhouse fondly. Here in the Philippines, the Powerhouse era lasted until 2005 - right smack in the midpoint of my childhood. I wonder if you also had this “Hey, where did Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel go?” sentiment. Hahaha.
The City era was awesome too. Continuations of the newest of the Powerhouse cartoons, reruns of cartoons whose earlier seasons we missed, etc.
07-11 was a CN “gap era” for many of us in my circle; we tuned in more to Disney at that time.

CN ebbs and flows kinda, the late 2000s and late 2010s both being slump periods for them, the 90s being their only decade that improved towards the end. I think that lady would've also said CN wasn't what it used to be even in 2007 (when their first decline was in full swing), but might've said it's still great in say 2012 (when their renaissance was in full swing).

It was mostly a good time for me. I had just moved out of my dad's and bought my first house in 99. I had a c-band dish and many providers were available for all the premium channels for cheap (and worthwhile TV on those channels). My car was only 10 years old, and gas and propane were still not at the top of the list of expenses. I had a dialup internet connection, and most websites still ran well on that. Being hacked was of little concern. There was no Facebook or smartphones. The first realtime thing I remember was ICQ and that was insane because you could watch people type. Didn't have a cellphone. A calling card for my landline was fine and pay phones were still around. Popular songs of the time by Linkin Park (Crawling), Gwen Stefani and whoever she teamed up with, Pink (Don't Let Me Get Me), Lee Ann Womack (I Hope You Dance), Matchbox 20 (If You're Gone), Train (Drops Of Jupiter), Jason Mraz (The Remedy).

I miss mostly 2000, first half of 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2009. 2004 was okay, too. In the other years my personal life was from meh to bad. 2002 was terrible and to this day I refuse to listen to songs from it. 2003 was great though! In 2008 and 2009 I was at university, while in 2000-2002 I was still in middle school. I miss the school I used to visit in 1995 - early 2001. I was much happier as a pre-teen and kid than as a teen. I hated the schools I went to in 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 - 2006/2007. 2003/2004 at age 15 was my best school year there. :)
I was not into pop music in 2000, but this video/song totally takes me back to the Y2k era, it causes me instant nostalgia. My life was as happy as in the video in the 90s and 2000, just not as futuristic (was using Windows 98 ;D and those clothes and hairstyles didn't get big here before 2001-2004, e.g. Dragostea Din Tei). Note the beats/synths at 2:42 and 2:50-2:52, both so typical Y2k era:
ggiUMDccO0Y
I don't really miss the second half of 2001 or 2002. I miss 2003, but maybe it's mid 00s. But I totally miss the Y2K era 1999-2000.
