Subject: "Late 2008 Shift" now 10 years old

Written By: 2001 on 11/06/18 at 5:22 pm

Obama's election, the start of the Great Recession, Lady Gaga's Pokerface, the prolifération of HDTVs, the release of the iPhone 3G, the introduction of HD video to YouTube, the rise of Facebook and Twitter.

It all took place approximately a decade ago.

Is anyone else shook by this? :o

It felt like a new era was being ushered in, was scary and fun at the same time

No. Time goes on. We could not live in the first year of the late 2000s forever. All cycles must go on. In 2008, Instagram did not exist, so Twitter and Facebook were popular. Then, in 2011, the world came to the realization that it is much easier to post pictures on Instagram from your iPhone than it is to do the same on Facebook. Now, Snapchat has just about replaced Instagram. As the 2020s move along, Snapchat will be on the chopping block. Nothing stays the same.

That really feels like another world from this.  2018, in most aspects, is almost completely the opposite of 2008 and I would say that applies to both the positive and negative aspects.  I would say much of what was great about 2008 isn't so great in 2018, but much of what sucked about 2008 is much better in 2018 eg. the US economy.

I would say 2017 was the last year that still had echoes of the culture that 2008 gave birth to and that was only the very early part of 2017.

There are a lot of differences between 2008 and 2018, and most of that is the political atmosphere back then in comparison to today which is a big deal.

When it comes to the technology and pop culture however, 1998 and 2008 had a much better difference.

2008-2013 was its own pocket era to me, as I've mentioned before.

I have a mixed opinion of this topic. In some sense, 2008 does feel as though it was ten years ago, because I was only 9 years old and in Year 3. On the flip side of the coin, however, I can remember 2008 so vividly and it doesn't seem as though it was so long ago.

I mentioned this on Popedia only a few days ago, but even the way in which people go about their day to day lives has changed quite significantly since then. Back in 2008, most people still carried physical cash with them; nowadays, people primarily make purchases through Paywave and credit/debit cards. We have essentially become a cashless society.

It was a hybrid year, with most of the 2010s feeling came on around October/November

I would say Late 2008- 2016 was it's own era

But inside of this Big Era I would say Late 2008- 2012 was one pocket era
2013-2016 was another

A lot of things were different back then but it doesn't feel like it was 10 years ago. That's crazy.

It feels like 10 years ago to me.

I think that many people are underestimating how different 2008 is from now.

Age plays a big role in how one would view 2008. Most people under 20 would view 2008 as a long time ago since it was more than half their lifetime ago. As someone who was 12 that year, I see it as a long time ago. Not just because I was much younger but just looking at the technology from that year, how primitive youtube was at the time and me having conversations with people born in that year. I say 2008 is in the classic territory right now. Old enough to be nostalgic for but recent enough to where kids don't feel too out of place.

I think it took a long time for things to really feel that much different from late 2008 (and especially 2009) but I think around the second half of 2017 we started to put a lot of distance between then and now culturally.  2018 feels worlds away from 2008.  2016 doesn't though.

Once Trump got elected that's when people start to see 2008 as another era. In 2016 2008 still felt modern to me but not so much now.

In where I am from, I didn't really start to see the changes until September or even October 2017.

The place where I'm from is very urban so the changes took place somewhere in May/June 2017.

I'm from a more "suburb" area. It was definitely around September or October of last year when I started seeing these "post-hipsters". I think that stuff like emo rap and Fortnite started to become popular around that time as well.

September/October 2017 was also, in my opinion, when the Y/Z transition was finally complete.

Extremely shook, that was my youth! I remember all of that as being "recent" and it seems my timer just stopped there.

It's weird and wonderful to go back to videos from back then and watch them in perfect HD.

We had some old magazines at work from 2005-2010 and I was showing some of the late teens/early 20s the adverts in them for phones, tvs and video games and a lot of those kids found the technology quite familiar, which comes as something of a relief.

But the next generation (or 1/2 generation) in another 5 years time probably will only have known touch screen smartphones.

And it's weird to talk to people as adults and know that when I was in my first year of being an adult they were still a small child.

I really dislike the passage of time.

It's mainly because I don't have any "youth" memories at all. All I remember was sat in my bedroom, at college/uni and then later unemployed in front of my computer in my childhood house.

I never had a life when I was young and now the next thing I know is that I am approaching middle age and it's horrible! :\'(

First of all 30 is not middle age lol, you're still considered a young adult by most standards.

Also it's never too late to live the life :)! By your 30s you are definitely not old yet. And technically you have all the freedom of the world and financially stable if you're out of uni but not have kids yet. No wonder all the stereotypical cool businessmen that go to clubs or borrow private jets are in their late 20s-30s ;D

The thirties are usually the peak of someone's life!

With the exception of the political atmosphere, I would say 2008 began to feel very dated around 2012/2013. By 2012, the smartphone and everything that came with it became ubiquitous. Electro/synth expanded beyond pop around this time to other genres (e.g. electro indie) and yuppies and hipsters began to blend into a new category -- yuccie or yupster. The high school classes of '08 & '09 were beginning to graduate college around '12 & '13 and entering the workforce.

That's kind of you but I do feel like no matter what I do now, it will always be "less" than if I started when I was younger.

I think 30 is pushing it to be considered a "young" adult, that is under 25, or even 24 in some cases.

I would settle for either of those ages again.

This is not the forum for such discussions though, it is just borne of the feeling that I lack memories from my late teens and throughout my 20s.

I feel like the last age I was "okay" with my age was 25.

2008 was 2008. Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough. All I remember is; living with my fiance in her apartment, being broke, some good stuff on tv, power outages and sex, weed. Then next year my first son was born. I spent most of the year in the area I lived since it was just too much to get in the city.

I have a 2008 car and it's contemporary design seems timeless and nowhere near dated and it has basically been unchanged design from 98-11. New cars suck anyway.
