Subject: Weirdest years of the 2000's

Written By: John Titor on 08/11/18 at 2:25 pm

What years of the 2000's you find odd?

Ill give you mine

2007: The year felt very standalone, had a very dark and digital feeling, Iphone was released and had a high tech vibe.

2009: Feels like this year should not even be a 2000s year at all, Felt like a nuclear culture bomb went off and eliminated everything 2000s.

Well, definitely 2000 stands out like a sore thumb with all the Y2K stuff, it fits neither very well in the 90s or the rest of the 2000s for that matter. Even 2001 had some non-Y2K R&B, Hip Hop and Rock and overall "early 2000s" vibe that gels it better with the rest of the 2000s, but 2000 not so much. It's just a very unique year (and rightfully so?  ???)

That summer was weird
Pokemon the movie 2000 was weird in a good way I liked it
Y2k pop was at its peak

Dreamcast was still futuristic

I think WWf started getting less popular around Survior Series 2000

2004
It still had some early 00s TV feel, yet it didn't gel on well with 2003 nor 2005 musically. 2005 was the start of the new Disney era so TV was better but 2004 had the better pop music.

By Fall 2004 is when Emo got huge, also Myspace was huge in fall 2004, I feel like 2004's second half was like a new era in a sense

2000 while it's mainly regarded as a Y2K year you had a lot of trends that started that year that set the tone for the rest of the decade like the rise of Bow Wow, PlayStation 2, Bush being elected, Bratz dolls, the rise of Disney Channel, Sean Paul breaking out with his press play album.

2002 was extremely bizarre because of how popular electronica was in America during that time, coupled with teen pop being dead as disco yet the 2000s atmosphere still not really being totally distinguished from the Y2K era yet. It was also the year of Yu-Gi-Oh!, while the ever-popular Pokémon appeared to be on its way out for good at the time, before Ruby & Sapphire rescued the franchise and Yu-Gi-Oh! quickly began to devolve into a niche after only a short time. Furthermore, 2002 was roughly the first time that people took the Internet pretty much totally for granted (i.e., it wasn't this "hip" thing anymore like it was in the late '90s and start of the millennium), yet its functions were still completely primitive compared to a mere few years later, when social media and online videos became a legit deal.

This is such a well accurate description, I agree to. 2007 at least was a cool weird.

2000 being the most outlier year of the entire decade, still had that extreme Y2K or late 90's cultural vibe.

2003 may have been the start of the core 2000's, but man it was an awkward bridge between early 2000's trends and mid 2000's trends. I'll never forget that huge chart JordanK1982, Nerdy and I did explaining all the remains 2003 had but all the new things it offered that year that had a huge impact on the 2000's.

2008, because a lot of people believe this is when the 2000's ended and when 2010's culture started (which isn't true BTW) but it was still a huge transitional year. 2008 felt so different than all the other 2000's years. It had its own distinct feel for multiple reasons.

2003 was growing pains, that sLOWWWWWWWWWWW transition from the early 2000s to mid was ughhhhh slow
we were out of it by fall 2004, but damn that was terrible lol

People saying 2005 was peak 2000s is what makes it strange to me. How can 2005 have the most distinct 2000s vibe when the 2000s is said to not have its own vibe? Makes 2005 seem like this confusing blurry gray area of pop culture where no one knows what's happening.

However, personally I'd say 2002. To me the year doesn't seem to fit with the core 2000s "image". When I think of 2000s the year 2002 never match up with what I visualize, but maybe I just have an incorrect view on the 2000s. It's not Y2K and it's not very 2000s either to me. Maybe it's due to the 2000s having rapid change or again maybe I just got the wrong idea on what the 2000s is supposed to be. 2002 isn't Y2K like 2000, but it still had a noticeable amount of trends that were popular in 2000, but at the same time it still had core 2000s trends coming around as well. The year 2002 is stuck in transition.

2005 was the peak lmao  Myspace was almost at its peak, as well as aim, Motorola razr at its peak,  it just felt very 2000 ish, Pop Punk was at its strongest this year, it was also strong in 2006 but things started changing in late 2006. 2005 is nicer to say the peak because 2006 had all of that stuff such as facebook, youtube taking off (with facebook taking until March of 2007 to actually take off)

2002, Is my favorite, maybe its the weird feeling? the traces of y2k were fading fast, we still had stores like Ames still around, The music was getting more mature, Britney Spears went her Slave 4 u era, Alt rock/folk was coming back with Michele branch and Vanessa Carlton, The WWE was on a downswing but still semi popular,  2002 did have a weird vibe, but that is what I liked about it, it felt like 2002 was still confused from 9/11 and didn't know what direction to take the culture. Euro Dance was huge in 2002, Kylie Minogue was charting like crazy, I can't get you out of my head was EVERYWHERE... 2002 was just a year that was confused of itself pop culturally

2001 felt very fever dream-ish. 9/11, Adult Swim came out with shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Fear Factor got people to eat bugs and drink urine, Osmosis Jones had a battle between cells inside a pimple, etc. A lot of it is really absurd/surreal, but it makes sense given the context of the year.

The late 00s and early 2010s are known for their love of "lol random" absurd humor, particularly 2006-2008. But if I had to vote, I'd definitely vouch for 2007. Both Tim and Eric and Xavier: Renegade Angel, two of the weirdest shows ever made, came out. Online content this year was very weird too. It was still during the era of the internet being the wild west, but since we also now had Web 2.0, you got really absurdist YouTube videos. Back in 2006-2008, the weird side of YouTube was the ONLY side of YouTube (on a comment of Charlie the Unicorn, definitely a symbol of late 2000s absurdism). Asdfmovie came out in 2008, and IMO really helped define late 2000s humor, so basically, absurd non-sequitur humor that's incompressible even to supposedly "weird" zoomers. Also the golden age of YouTube Poops that were just Nintendo characters saying "spaghetti" and "dinner" over and over again.

Early 2010s were also absurdist but don't have the darkness/edginess of 2000s culture, instead being bright and colorful and influenced by scene culture. Late 2000s were still dark like the rest of the 2000s but also absurdist. Basically, contrast Adventure Time (particularly early episodes), with Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.

Overall though, 2001 and 2006-2008 (and kinda 2005 to an extent) definitely feel like bizarre fever dreams as years. It's part of why I especially love the late 2000s. Modern pop culture feels much more banal, I miss late 2000s era experimentation, even if it ends up being incomprehensible.

A better title would be least-weird year of the 2000s since every year was weird. And for that I would say 2004. '04 felt like a very stable year with not too many changes happening in that year.

Least weird year would have to be 2002 IMO, especially in comparison to the surreal insanity that defined 2001. It felt like we were just trying to get back to normal.
Mid-2000s in general definitely feel more realistic and less surreal in tone compared to either the early or late 2000s. Sites like YouTube however really changed that.
