Subject: 2005-2014 is my favorite Disney Channel era
Written By: xris on 08/08/18 at 7:50 pm
When it comes to original live-action shows I think 2005-2014 was the best Disney era. You could incl. 2015 as well as some shows ended then and to make it a full decade. The various series with Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Dylan and Cole Sprouse et al. were very watchable compared to the overrated early 2000s. I say 2015, but most good ones ended in about 2010-2013.
More recent ones are either reboots or cashing on previous franchise.
Those live-action shows were simple, yet very relatable and were also so totally 2000s, early 2010s. shows showed me that I prefer the culture of younger than me gen Ys and even gen Z ppl. I'm 30 now, yet somehow I changed so much in those years it was like I had a second childhood. :)

Oh hell no, I couldn't stand any of those shows when I had to babysit my little sisters watching them ;D
TBH I never liked Disney channel, except in the '90s (completely different kind of channel), not my cup of tea.
I'll admit to liking Good Luck Charlie and Dog with a Blog, though. :-X And Jessie had its moments.

Cute, fresh opinion I approve of ;). Never been that much of a fan of live-action shows, I did enjoy watching shows like That's so Raven, Zack and Cody, and of course the king of Disney live-action shows:

Would have never gotten into Disney Channel without it!
I watched about every new episode of That's So Raven seasons 2 and 3 as those premiered!

For me it wasn't until 2nd grade when I began to enjoy live-action shows thanks to That's So Raven and Drake & Josh. Kindergarten and 1st grade I could only watch cartoons for some reason and could never understand the dialogue in sitcoms at a very young age. :P

That's interesting. Are you a boy or girl Xris? From what I noticed, society seems to be more acceptant of girls being into "childhood" things into teen or young adulthood, which is why you may feel attached to those Gen Z shows. With guys though, it's kinda stigmatized and they're seen as "man children".

At 30 I'm no longer a boy I guess but a man. But yeah I relate to a lot of Later Gen Y / early Gen Z things. The 00s were kinda weird for me. I loved 2003-2004/2008-2009 music but 2005-2009 Disney, TV and fashion/tech > those from 2000-4.

I'm not gonna lie you were sounding a bit like a stereotypical Gen Z fan girl for a sec ;D. Then I saw that you stated your age was 30, and I was like 'Oh Damn... my bad". LOL.
Anyways, I agree with Zelek. Girls may have been more attached to those shows you mentioned, and thus may have never had a reason to 'grow out' of them as quickly as other mediums, say cartoons. However, because of the negative stigma DC received in the Late 2000s, especially as being to feminine, many guys felt that they would be revoking their man cards if they ever admitted to liking those shows. Not saying there was anything wrong for liking those shows, I don't judge anybody's taste & everybody's right to their own opinion. But in all honesty, I can't say I necessarily disagree with a lot of the prime criticisms of the channel post 2006 (the year that both Hannah Montana & High School Musical premiered, but the change did not happen overnight, hence why I give the year an honorable pass). So essentially, any Disney Channel show made before 2006, was generally speaking more gender/age inclusive, than many of the shows made after 2006.
So for me, my favorite era of Disney Channel was definitely from 2000-2005/06', aka the Zoog & Early 'Modern' DC eras. Basically the era of Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, The Famous Jett Jackson, Thats So Raven, Phil of the Future, The Proud Family, Kim Possible, and any DCOM made from 1996-2004, among other properties. You also cannot forget about the awesomeness that was Vault Disney, and late 90s/early 00s era Playhouse Disney. NOW THAT, my friend, was the Golden Age of Disney Channel 8)
A little memorandum for this awesome era:

Hehe, I didn't like HM. As for Demi and Selena I was kinda "Disney and other teen stars back when I was that age were uglier and too boring vanilla WASPs like Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson etc." Btw Raven is Black not Latin afaik. I like Latin culture and it's closer to South European culture, so it's easier to relate to a Hispanic person than a WASP or an AA for us South and Southeastern Europeans. It was ground-breaking to cast Latina girls as the stars. It might've happened before but in 1995-2004 Latin ppl were just sidekicks on kids/teen TV. There was Maria on Sesame Str. but she was not close to my age. My internal tween/teen was finally able to watch some quality tween/teen TV. ;)
The Jonas on the other hand were my idols as I've always wanted to be in a band. No one in 1995-2004 was really relatable as rappers have similar, but different struggles to us Latin/South Euros. Btw the Jonas bros also have some European Latin ancestry and it shows. I don't have blonde hair or blue eyes, so they actually looked more like me.
For the other shows like Zack and Cody's anticks: With dumb reality shows aimed at my age group where ppl were negative, angry, evil can you blame me liking no-frills, optimistic kids' entertainment? Why watch Big Brother and all the drama most similar shows portray? Real life is hard enough. I prefer escapist entertainment. :)
Btw, A Dog with A Blog is ALF-level of greatness.
Oh an another one, this one animated: Kid vs. Kat was shown here on Disney as well.

That's quite sexist, but I don't blame you, US culture is very strict about things like that. ;) Thankfully Europe is more relaxed about that. I know many moms whose teen boys watched Wizards, Sonny and they didn't bat an eye. Similarly here dancing doesn't make you gay. ;D
Of course I never got into Lazytown, it's way OTT pink, girly and it was for little children and not teens anyway. I was very nerdy and studious age 13-17, so I missed on a lot of teen culture. But also, there were not enough live action shows, most were animated I considered for little kids by then. The only teen live-action show I remember from that time was Lizzie McGuire but that was hollier than thou and too saccarine.
The only overly girly one in the mid-late 2000s was HM. And my internal 15 year old liked her comedic timing so I've wacthed a couple of episodues (guilty!) ;) Can you blame me, most of the teen stars around my age back in the early 2000's didn't have the it factor like the Jonas bros, Miley, Selena and Demi. Somehow in 2000-2004 all the stars were older than me then, i.e. they were 16 and older while I was 12-15. Circa 1988-borns skipped the pre-teen and early teen star stage. Rihanna appeared in 2005 when we were both 17, so late teens.

I've always said that Cartoon Network's main audience was mostly boys, Disney Channel's main audience was mostly girls, while Nickelodeon presented their network in a way that appealed to both boys and girls with Nick Jr, Nicktoons, and the Teen Nick programming. That's why it's really sad when you look at how far Nickelodeon has fallen apart. That network used to be very organized when it came to its programming and blocks. Anyways, let's get to my point....
Even though Disney Channel went complete girly 100% with all shows centered around tweenybooper music after Hannah Montana and High School Musical became huge hits, in GENERAL Disney Channel has always appealed more to girls than boys with multiple shows, not just Hannah Montana. The trend began when Lizzie McGuire came out (which is a show I was never into BTW) while Hannah Montana completed the transition. If you look at Disney Channel's commercial bumpers and promos over the years with the tween pop culture it's always appealed more to young girls in that part as well. You had some Disney Channel shows with male leads like Phil & the Future and Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and even those always had subplots on the side centered around a female or 2, the later (Suite Life) was probably the most male appealing show out of all the Disney Channel shows, but that was just one. 90% of Disney Channel sitcoms and even Disney Channel original cartoons had a FEMALE lead. Almost every Disney Channel star was required to sing or look a certain way, even if her show wasn't revolved around singing.
Growing up watching Disney Channel, despite how girly the network was presented, The Proud Family, Kim Possible, That's So Raven, Phil of the Future, Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Dave the Barbarian, American Dragon Jake Long, and Lilo & Stitch were a pretty good balance to where males could still enjoy the shows and there weren't any shows centered around tween pop music back then either. I also watched reruns of Sister, Sister, Smart Guy, and Even Stevens on some occasions. Not to mention, you can't forget the ORIGINAL MOVIES as well, the original movies from 1996-2006 was probably the best thing about the network IMO. They didn't just play original movies all the time though, they played ANY movie owned by Disney in general. 2005 was the absolute peak year of Disney Channel with all the shows I watched and enjoyed. 2005 had the original ending of Kim Possible with So the Drama and The Proud Family Movie. 2005 had the premiere of American Dragon Jake Long and the end of Dave the Barbarian. 2005 had That's So Raven season 3 (which started in late 2004) which was the absolute peak of the show in its popularity and ratings. 2005 had the premiere of Suite Life of Zack & Cody and the entire 1st season. 2005 had Phil of the Future season 2. Lilo & Stitch was still around regularly. I would go back to 2005 any day when it comes to Disney Channel's main programming, reruns, and movies.

Disclaimer: I was also a hater of those Disney shows back then, although I watched them. I think the hate was because they were so popular, you read about them everywhere online and it was a bit too overwhelming. However, looking back now I see they were quite enjoyable. Much higher quality than TV now.
You don't watch Disney or cartoons for substance. I watched Disney for the cool, goofy, hip young ppl having fun. My own early teens were nowhere near as cool and we didn't have the same type of young stars before 2005. Shows before 2005 were too preachy and too much problem-focused while 2005-2014 ones were mostly about having fun.
I agree H.M. was at times too saccarine and too sweet and marketed at girls, but Sonny With A Chance was more gender-neutral, less pink and girly. The guys had many lines. Same for Waverly Place -- the guys felt like co-leads to Selena anyway and had just as much screen time. The mother was a buxom MILF (see below). Jesse was just a nice also-ran show with a Selena Gomez-lookalike. Zack & Cody were cool and Ashley Tisdale & Brenda Song were the only 80s borns that embraced mid/late 2000s culture. They were basically 20-somethings living as teens, just like me. ;)
Hannah Montana was a HUGE pop phenomenon with news articles and forums that constantly talked about it. Even here on Inthe00s ppl were constantly following HM/MC and commenting on her. She was just everywhere! That's the reason most adults hated the show.
In the early 2000s and late 90s we didn't have this kind of young TV star and Brenda Song and Ashley Tisdale were sort-of late boomers career-wise, reaching mainstream success in kids show in their late teens/early 20s. And also two of those shows had a Latin lead which was ground-breaking.

That's how it happened for me. I didin't care for Disney as their shows in the early part of 2000's were corny, but one day Hannah Montana was on and I decided to give it a try: https://www.imdb.com/review/rw1400424/?ref_=tt_urv
I admit that the high publicity at first made me feel like punching MC and the other Disney stars of that era. ;D However, at least I gave them a chance. Most people that hate those shows haven't seen a full episode of them and just hate them due to the huge publicity. And also the pole dancing thing which, looking back, was not a big deal. Girls in Europe, heck even US girls do worse things at 16 and she was 17! Maybe it was kind of risque because she's underage, but idk she wasn't grinding or spinning or doing strippy moves on it. Brtiney's magazine cover was more suggesting. Americans are such prudes when it comes to things like that, yet they don't mind all the gore, explosions, guns on TV?! WTF. ;D

Yeah, for me Lizzie McGuire was pure preachy trash and I still think it is. OC was a glamorized soap opera, and One Tree Hill turned into a soap later on. I found the guys on OTH and the OC annoying and some of them were bullies. Just a bunch of annoying, emtitled, smug jocks. At least on late 00s/early 2010s shows they had less of the popular entitled jock prick characters; they showed that you can be anyone and be liked and accepted. I know they're not Disney but all early 00's shows were too much about popularity, superficial perfect girls and jocks.
The early 00's and 90's were too much about the popular people and they all looked like models, while 2005-2014 ones looked like normal people mostly. Most of the guys on HM, Sonny, W of Waverly place would've been cast as the losers no one likes in the 90's and early 2000's. People were more superficial back then, it was much more about cliques than now and bullying was promoted on TV as normal behavior. Cartoons in the 90's/early 00's were better, but live action shows improved after 2005. Heck, in the early 2000's 'Popular' a jock character walks over an obese guy. You'd never see such a thing on Sonny, HM etc. 2005-2014 shows brought acceptance of different quirks and not-so-perfect people. Miley Stewart, Sonny, the guys from SWAC and The Wizards would've been the losers in a 90s/early 00s show. Too many characters back then were outright mean, even the main ones had a smug I'm-better-than-you aura. Breaker High, Popular, The OC, One Tree Hill, the 90s and 00s Disney shows were filled with such characters. Most 70s and 80s borns have that smug attitude problem.

Lizzie was good that it was one of the first shows where the main character was a quirky person, almost a misfit. However it felt too preachy. Most post-2005 Disney shows were with quirky main characters. Ditto for non-Disney shows. I know we're a bit offtopic here, but in general after 2005 the social strata on shows has been realigned with more normal, quirky characters getting the spotlight.
Shows where the teenagers would look like Abercrombie & Fitch models were more a thing of the 90's and early 2000's. The dark-haired main male character on OTH gave douche vibes. Most of the characters on 'Popular' were not likeable. I think most 80s and earlier borns liked those glitzy pre-2005 shows because they matched our school experience of popular ppl being sporty jerks and into bullying. Such a character like Nicole Julian (Tammy Lynn Michaels) would not get a free pass on teen TV series since 2005 like she did. Nor would the jocks on OTH or 'Breaker High'.
Since 2005, those jock/princess characters are much rare and they're usually comic foil and a friend for the lead as the blonde girl on Sonny with a Chance. Those two would never become friends if the show was made in the 90s or early 00s. 2005+ was when 'losers', dorks, nerds or just ordinary, quirky ppl that happen to NOT be perfect were finally getting the spotlight. In 21 Jump Street the jock was the less liked in the present-day h.s.

2002-2007 which is known as the "peak" (according to wikipedia) is also my favorite too, although I was mainly into the network from 2003-2006.
Damn xris your opinion on Disney Channel is an interesting perspective regarding the fashion, makeup and personality of the Disney characters ;D in fact your opinion on Disney Channel might be more similar to nally but I'm not sure. One thing I noticed about the later years of Disney Channel especially the late 2000's is that it had a heavy tween west coast culture vibe with a lot of its sitcoms. I always forget that Selena Gomez is latina and her character on Wizards of Waverly Place (including the mom actress Maria Canals-Barrera). Wizards was probably one of the few decent shows Disney Channel had in the late 2000's (even tho I didn't care for it), but I probably would have watched it more often had it come out earlier.

It's funny how ppl older than 25 complain their old favorites are not shown, yet when Raven has a new show on Disney, they do not watch it.
I never watched That's So Raven, but caught some of Raven's Home and it seems quite nice. :)
