During high school, what you would call hipsters in my day listened to Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and if you were a collegiate, Broken Social Scene and Dinosaur Jr. They watched movies like Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Lost in Translation, and wore skinny jeans, the girls wore cardigans and they liked to shop at thrift stores.

Awesome bands!!! I loved the whole garage band revival of the early 2000s. I prefer 2000s/the very early 2010s hipster to the hipster that is popular now.

I didn't really listen to those bands in high school but I had hipster friends who did. I did watch all the hipster movies tho. lol.

I don't really consider what people call hipsters these days "hipsters". The hipsters as I understand them are more DIY, underground, "you probably never heard of it" oriented. The so-called hipsters everyone here refers to are just fashionistas.

I remember hipsters being a thing as early as 2002, I remember talking about them around 2005 too.

Kinda weird to see The 2000s, the Hip-Hop decade, be the starter of a movement(???)/fashion like Hipster culture... But, everything does have to start somewhere, I guess. ^.^'

The 2010s is more of a hip-hop decade than the 2000s by a hundred miles. Rock music had a far larger presence in the 2000s and hipster culture was mainly born out of the indie rock subculture.

Hipsterdom definitely already had a presence in the 2000s (I think it already was a pejorative therm as well back then), like said popularized by the indie rock/post-punk revival/garage rock revival of the early 2000s. Although back then it was more of a niche thing and didn't really have a huge impact on the mainstream yet unless it crossed over with other noughties trends like boho chic or emo (which would eventually birth the hit Hey There Delilah ;D).

2010s is more of a Hip-Hop decade because it's been the dominate genre. I would put the 2000s behind the 2010s because mainstream music in the 2000s was much more diverse.

It's more popular to mirror black people now than in the 2000s. You just don't notice it because 1. black culture is no longer of the XXL white T variety. The gangstas of yesterday aren't the same. And 2. African American culture is at its most popular so people tend not to notice it's "black" because it's the norm now. Seriously, what song on the charts doesn't have an African American musical influence. Name one.

Starting in the late '00s, Millennials wanted to move from their small towns and suburbs to trendy walkable neighborhoods with coffee shops, unique bars, ethnic cuisine, local bookstores, record stores, etc.  These neighborhoods were historic yet glitzy at the same time.  I believe that is the beginning of the "hipster culture" we know today and I think it's primarily an Obama-era cultural trend.

So maybe this is why the 2000s  2000-2006 felt suburban while
2007-2009 felt urban?  (geographical wise)
